End of Gas Lease Fight in Philadelphia Council

Philadelphia June 2 Without a dissenting vote both branches of the city council withdrew the ordinance extending the city gas works to United Gas Improvement for 75 years for which the company would pay the city 25 million dollars. The council also confirmed Colonel Sheldon Potter as director of public safety and A Lincoln Acker as director of public works. May or Weaver attended but was not called to testify. The tax rate was set at 1.50 per 100 next year. Mayor Weaver later denounced the gas lease recall as a death from which there is no resurrection and sought statements on the companys expenditures and what would be due if the city retook the gas works.
