Edward suggests Germany mediation while Britain and France consider aid to Spain.
From Melilla reports describe troops and Moorish forces pausing hostilities to bury thousands killed in Tuesday’s battle. Mortality toll 4,000 with several thousand wounded as corpses dumped in trenches near city walls. Madrid warns of possible cabinet resignation if war conditions persist.

Two parlor cars of the St Paul and Milwaukee express derailed near Brookfield as it left Milwaukee for St Paul at 11 40. Dr W L Sheet of Chicago treated the injured on board. The injured include Harrison S Green Milwaukee attorney Charles W Hamilton Milwaukee Lace Paper Co president and treasurer Mrs Joseph Snyder Belleview Ill Joseph Snyder Belleview Ill Catherine Haught Clifton Hotel Minneapolis Minn All suffered various injuries and bruises.
Three thousand Spanish reservists flee Spain to avoid military duty and reach Hendaye in France in a pitiful state. They arrive ragged and hungry after fleeing revolutionaries who burned convents and the government troops razed the People's Club building.
The Cuban cabinet presented its resignation to President Gomez upon his return to Havana from Cayo Cristo. Senator Castellanos and Vice-President Zayas prepared resignations. The ministry stepped down due to unpopularity.
New York July 30 reports that no games are expected in either the National or American leagues on the day Harry C. Pulliam, late National League president, is buried. The funeral date is not yet announced.
The tariff bill committee reports new rates boosting cotton hosiery and gloves while cutting lumber print paper and several metals and chemicals. Other items see mixed or unchanged duties as the bill heads to the president for signing.
Washington D C July 26 the perfected tariff bill is submitted to the house by Payne and the conferees after 21 days of reconciling house and senate versions to meet President Taft's views. The bill will be first acted on in the house and then sent to the senate with a possible vote by tomorrow.
In Milwaukee Wisconsin on July 30 a special police force guarded Mrs. Frank Brockhaus as she awaited trial on mayhem charges. A crowd of about 1000, mostly women, packed the court and corridors, with some attempting to mob her before extra officers kept order. The previous arraignment had drawn indignant onlookers and a cleared courtroom required to restore order.
George H. Earle receiver for the Pennsylvania Sugar Refining company asked the common pleas court to consider accepting a $750,000 settlement offer from the American Sugar Refining Company. He noted the largest Sherman act verdict he recalls is $700,000 and seeks release of collateral parties to avoid further litigation.
In White Plains Justice Mills questions Harry K. Thaw on three key points including White's paranoia, Thaw's incoherent notes, and an alleged exaggerated ego. Thaw leaves the stand shaken yet says he impressed the judge. Jerome wraps up cross examination as Morschauser plans rebuttal and Thaw prepares for further testimony.
Testimony before the arbitration board at La Crosse city hall alleges that policemen firemen and their families rode free on La Crosse City Railway cars after Superintendent Shaw ordered staff not to collect fares. Assistant Superintendent Harrier and conductor Masterson testified that officers were to be passed without tickets and that no written order existed.
July 30 report: Charles Beasley shot and killed his infant child, wounded his wife who fled and was forced back, then shot himself. Mrs. Beasley survived briefly with poor prospects.
In Detroit on July 30 first heat pace 2 24 with Argot Hall winning and Angelina second. A 2 25 trot saw Dr Jack take the win with My Gift second. Free for all pace produced Lady Maud C winning with Citation second and Darkey Hall third, others listed with times.
Final tributes were paid to Mrs. Frank P. Hixon at a funeral service held at her home 1431 King Street with Rev. C N Moller officiating. Interment followed at Oak Grove cemetery as a procession of flowers marked the sentiment of friends. Pallbearers included L C Colman H L Colman J B Taylor G W Burton G H Gordon G W Traer Andrew Lees and W F Goodrich.
Denver officials approve a permit for the Flynn versus O'Brien fight in a municipal auditorium. Governor Shafroth had said he would seek enforcement, but reform leaders appeal again to the governor and district attorney to enforce the law.
Henry R. Peterson, a Seventh Day Adventist nurse from Battle Creek Michigan, allowed J W Thompson lessee of Judge J B Searle near St. Cloud to beat him into insensibility. Mrs Searle tried to intervene and was struck, breaking her arm. Thompson is under arrest.
In Chicago on July 30, William Matthews, a young aeronaut, rode a dirigible for two hours before the balloon buckled at 400 feet. He landed on a shed and survived with painful injuries as the airship wrecked. Matthews retrieved the wreck and vanished from sight after the perilous descent.
The Zalus Davis, among the oldest Mississippian rafters, departed yesterday after two months tied at the levee for new boilers. It will resume its duties as a rafter on the river.
In Madison Nebraska on July 29 Chas Knapp aged 30 shot his wife at their home and then killed himself. The wife is expected to recover though a bullet passed through her body without lung damage. Authorities attribute the act to temporary heat induced derangement.
A. M. Greeley editor of the Big Forks Compass and famed rural Minnesota editorial paragrapher died at Big Falls Minnesota of consumption.
A petition in Mexico City asks former President Theodore Roosevelt to be named as the successor to David B Thompson, who is expected to resign as American ambassador to Mexico.
In a New York court Thaw faced a private examination by his own lawyer as he fights to gain freedom from Matteawan.
