A delegate charges that William Randolph Hearst sought to defeat William Jennings Bryan in the political contest. Gompers counterattacks, labeling Hearst deceitful as the debate over strategy intensifies among party leaders.
Bryan voices the charge that the Democratic platform offers no real difference from past positions. He argues the party has not changed course and remains aligned with established policy.
Joseph T. Marshall of Plymouth Nebraska the sole Nebraska delegate to the Independence convention says the gathering was packed and the platform was not read. He notes Hearst men rarely spoke against Taft while vowing defeat of Bryan. Bryan in Lincoln contrasts Independence planks with Democratic lines and warns voters against aiding Republicans.
W. D. Atwood, local American Express agent, was arrested on a warrant by Game Warden George Kingsley. He is charged with receiving boxes of fish for shipment without the shipper’s name, violating law requiring shipper and receiver names, fish type, and weight on each box.
The Democratic slate now includes Robert W. Gifford for county clerk and B F Keeler for the First district assembly. Keeler, who previously ran for assembly and lost, joins a ticket that already lists E J Kneen and William Garbers for the second district assembly, plus other announced posts.
Attorneys seek Lamphere release on habeas corpus based on Dr. Raines report claiming Mrs. Gunness died by suicide from arsenic strychnine and morphine traces. They argue other evidence supports self murder and predict popular acquittal.
A suit to enjoin the proposed merger of lumber companies into a $300,000,000 combine to control the yellow pine industry was filed in Circuit Court by Attorney General Hadley. Judge Kinsey granted a temporary restraining injunction returnable August 17.
Mrs. Johanna Homer received a divorce from Edward O. Homer after alleging years of domestic abuse including whipping and kicking. Judge Fruit granted the divorce after considering the wife's testimony and limited defense from the husband.
New York July 30. Wabash directors meet to save Gould eastern properties from Harriman by proposing six million dollar bonds to secure an eight million loan from Kuhn Loeb and Blair. The plan aims to protect Wheeling and Lake Erie and Gould interests but faces doubt. An official statement will follow.
Taft dismisses reports that he said one to one and a quarter dollars a day is enough for labor. He jokes the campaign is young and notes opportunities to pinch his fingers. Taft's secretary issues a statement stating the falsehood and confirms no such remark.
Former Senator Harris of Kansas urges the war department to harness the Kaw River. Rain showers trigger the river to swing Kansas City Kansas toward Missouri and cause property damage. Captain Edward Schulz orders an investigation and recommendations for control.
The Batavian Bank sues Modern Laundry for 500 dollars and seeks a temporary injunction to stop dense smoke from the business. The case was adjourned until Saturday for a final ruling on admissibility of oral testimony and whether the injunction becomes permanent.
In Pensacola a mob of about 1,000 attacked the jail after the lynching of Leander Shaw. Deputy fire killed one mob member and wounded many. Shaw was killed and his victim Mrs. Lillian Davis badly slashed and hospitalized. The siege left several injured and Shaw displayed on an electric pole.
Robert Sievier, nephew of Barney Barnato heir J B Joel, was acquitted at Bow Street after facing blackmail charges over a $25 000 demand. A 25 000 crowd cheered the verdict but a 25 000 mob attacked Jews outside the jail, police intervening to rescue Joel and others as Sievier was spared.
Pittsburgh July 30. Police and detectives are in an uproar over attempts to force Nan Patterson from the city. Detective Louis Leff is suspended and others fear resignations may follow after it became public that Patterson was told to leave. Patterson remains in Pittsburgh and says she will stay.
The Lansing Journal reports Rev John Wellington Hoag denied a call to lead a women’s church in Atlantic City. He said a Baptist church offered a pastorate he would not accept and declined to discuss his fiancée or marriage plans. He returned home to resume duties at his church tonight.
The Tribune reports Rev Hoag reached Lan sing at 1 am after a telegram from William M. Hoag. A sensational hoax article about his private life circulated, but local parishioners remain supportive as he plans a future statement for Saturday papers.
Hackensack July 30 The grand jury indicted August Eberhardt for the murder of his aunt Otillie Eberhardt in Rochelle Park on July 18 The court will hear his plea this afternoon and the record punishment is expected.
La Crosse records 76 warmest in the nation 90 in Phoenix. River at La Crosse falls to 6.7 feet down .1 foot, Prairie du Chien at 7.9 feet down .2 foot. Forecasts: Wisconsin cooler with possible local storms tonight then Friday fair and cooler. Minnesota generally fair tonight and Friday cooler east portion. Iowa cooler with likely storms east and central tonight then Friday fair with cooler east area.
