A Defense Department official cautions that a major Korea counteroffensive may not begin until mid fall or next spring. Talks of a time-gaining maneuver accompany build up of medium tanks and new tank killer bazookas.
President Truman to send Congress a 10 billion dollar Korea War mobilization plan next Tuesday. The package seeks partial mobilization and setting the stage for higher taxes to finance the effort. Senate and House leaders expect quick passage of two related measures expanding enlistments and removing manpower ceilings.
The census bureau on Saturday announced a preliminary 1950 U S population of 150 52 million, up nearly 19 million from 1940. The report includes state and DC totals, noting some home states are unknown and forecasting possible shifts in House seats. Final tallies arrive before December 1 for congressional apportionment.

Funeral Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church with Rev. Robert D. Winter officiating. Entombment in Oak Grove Mausoleum. Friends may call Sletten McKee south chapel Monday 7 to 9 p.m.
General MacArthur warned of a new phase in the Korean war suggesting a turning point with a more robust American line. Frontline observers note improved prospects for troop deployment and heavier firepower while North Korean invaders lose momentum. He said American hold on the southern region provides a secure base as troops continue to buy time.
Governor Allan Shivers won his first full term in the Texas primary with early returns showing a decisive lead over Case March. Shivers held about 68,113 votes to 18,413 for March as partial counts from 74 of 254 counties were reported, with five other candidates trailing.
Roland Hicks of 2315 Prospect reported to The La Crosse Tribune that he saw a white flying object at about 9 p m Saturday moving northeast toward the bluffs. He watched the fast moving craft for at least four seconds before it veered east and vanished.

OTTAWA reports former prime minister William Lyon Mackenzie King died Saturday night at Kingsmere his summer home near Ottawa at age 75. King suffered hypostatic pneumonia following acute pulmonary edema after a period of grave illness. He resigned in 1948 after 21 years as prime minister and 7,829 days in office the longest in British commonwealth history. He leaves a legacy of strong Canada US ties developed during World War II and close friendship with President Roosevelt. He was unmarried and survived by several nieces and nephews.
John Thomas Young, 36, of Litchfield, drowned in Walton park old city reservoir after two nearby fishermen offered assistance and he declined. Firemen recovered the body about an hour later.
American and North Korean patrols clashed on the Taejon front as Red armor and infantry mass for a new assault. U S artillery shelled the lines while guards from the first cavalry division reinforced positions around Yongdok and Taejon.
A 27,000 ton American aircraft carrier arrived in Tokyo after a record Pacific crossing of eight days and seven hours from the U S west coast. The ship carried an undisclosed large number of aircraft believed to include F-51 Mustang fighters for land based air operations. Navy Capt. Cameron Briggs, son of Gen. W R Briggs, took command shortly before the voyage.
Western observers discount a Russian led Cominform attack on Yugoslavia in the immediate future. They note Yugoslavia's 800000 strong army on alert since the Cominform denunciation in 1948 and border patrols against Hungary Romania Bulgaria and Albania. Soviet satellites reportedly carried out over 800 border provocations since the split.
In Frankfurt U S High Commissioner John J McCloy said on Saturday night it would be very difficult to deny Germans the right and the means to defend their own soil if attacked from the east.
General MacArthur said North Korean forces recaptured Yongdok on Korea's east coast. The town, recently leveled by allied naval gunfire, was seized by the Reds in a assault supported by naval barrage and ground troops.
