La Crosse Area Public School District Board voted 5 to 4 to cancel the dismissal hearing for Longfellow Junior High principal Myron McKee after debate. Balts cited public opinion and said retention on probation was in the district’s best interests.
U S officials say the United States will seek to repurchase plutonium from spent Tarapur reactor fuel amid fears it could be used for bombs. An NRC hearing suggested Congress approve return of spent fuel, with talks possibly within two months, though India has not been formally approached.
Senate Republicans hold the key as six undecided votes may push to override President Ford's veto of a 3.95 billion public works jobs bill. Griffin, a Ford ally, says he will vote to override, citing Michigan 9.7 percent and Detroit 13.4 percent unemployment. The measure would fund 200,000 public works jobs and 90,000 local government jobs, with 2 billion in grants and 1.25 billion in anti recession aid.
The Senate voted 91 to 5 to create a permanent prosecutor's office to handle scandals such as Watergate. The bill also bars presidents from naming campaign officials as attorney general or deputy. Ford's position favored a permanent office. Ford would appoint the prosecutor. White House reaction and committee endorsements followed.
Myron McKee and the La Crosse Area Public School District reach a five part stipulation on his role in student discipline. The agreement allows conditional continuation of employment with conduct limits and student discipline rules under Policy 5105 as read in a February 27 1976 letter. The panel may review issues if they arise and a Thursday hearing may be canceled if the board adopts the stipulation. The Feb 27 reprimand stemmed from how discipline was handled at Longfellow and forbids touching students while the corporal punishment policy dates to February 1975 and bars corporal punishment but allows self defense.
British ambassador Christopher Ewart-Biggs was killed when a land mine exploded beside his car as it left the Dublin embassy gates. Secretary Judith Cooke also died. Brian Cubbon and the chauffeur were seriously injured.
