The Senate passed a 2.20 an hour minimum wage plan matching much of the House bill. It would raise nonfarm wages from 1.60 to 2.20 and farm wages from 1.30 to 2.20 with staged increases over 60 days and a year, extending coverage to domestics and some farm workers. A veto remains likely.
La Crosse School Board voted 8 to 0 to close 1974 contract talks with the La Crosse Education Association and bar actions beyond joint press releases. Mayor Gilbertson urged open sessions and open disclosures, while Kuechmann dissented, urging joint releases but opposing unilateral secrecy.
