Naval scandal timeline notes a conspiracy to murder may be exposed. A Navy officer allegedly died by his own hand after a dance at the academy. Investigations followed with contested interpretations and new trials sought by relatives. Additional incidents include a Marine Corps lieutenant returning to answer murder charges and hazing injuries at the academy.
Lieut Adams testifies at Carvel Hall about the October 13 1907 incident near the academy. He recalls Sutton Uttley and Osterman fighting after Sutton called him a coward and later shot at him. Sutton toppled after a struggle, Roelker lay dead, and Sutton allegedly fired again before dying.
Secretary Taggart announced the full committees for the La Crosse Retail Grocers association picnic to be held Thursday July 29. Speakers will be Wm. Doerflinger A. B. Moll and T. A. Lavake. Various committees cover arrangements refreshments music advertising recreation grounds and reception with numerous named members.
Hubert Latham plunged into the English Channel while attempting to cross to win London Daily Mail prize money. The monoplane failed, he fell 350 feet, was rescued by the torpedo boat Harpon, and towed ashore as he vowed to repair and resume the flight with Count Lambert awaiting better weather.
Samuel Spellman, once wealthy, took his life by gas citing sickness and poverty. His body was found in his room, the result of a substantial financial loss.
In San Francisco on July 19 the court, resisting state efforts to delay, summoned 50 talesmen and started drawing a jury for the second Patrick Calhoun trial.
In a Mississippi river tragedy near Bunningslouga three La Crosse youths, George Lapitz and Joseph Bespaletz, both 19 and 20, drowned while attempting to rescue each other from quicksand on a sand bar during a fishing trip. Willie McCool returned with news as bodies were recovered near the scene.
The old Smith homestead at 4th and Vine streets north of the post office was sold by Mrs. Adelaide S. Smith to Mrs. Laura Cunningham and Mrs. Adelaide Chandler. The deed filed with the register of deeds does not disclose the consideration. The property had long housed the Smith family and was once regarded as one of the most beautiful homes in La Crosse.
Dallas reports four prominent young men accused of assault to murder after they allegedly beat Hale and his wife in an incident 12 miles east. Hale may die as the assailants, said to be drinking, allegedly stabbed the woman with a pitchfork. The district is on edge and the sheriff braces for possible violence as prisoners await charges.
In Owosso Michigan on July 18 Bill Gilbert a famed grand circuit driver was badly disfigured and seriously hurt when Durand a bay trotter trained for Stephen Brown of Detroit attacked him in a stall and bit a piece from Gilbert s cheek.
The Gund Brewing team routed Stamping and Tool aggregation Saturday by 15 to 0. Gund scored on 19 hits while Stamping and Tool managed only one. Ulrich pitched for the brewery squad.
