Senator La Follette assails President Taft for broken promises and pro‑corporate policies. He attacks the Canadian reciprocity pact as a betrayal and ties tariff shifts to Aldrichism and railroad interests. He cites the Payne‑Aldrich bill and accuses Taft of opposing an income tax and aiding trusts.
Mayor John Dengler announced the appointment of Professor A H Bernhard to the La Crosse health commission to replace the resignation of Professor Lewis Atherton. Atherton leaves to become Sparta public school superintendent, with Bernhard as head of the chemistry department at the local normal ready for the role.
Frank Henwood, convicted of second degree murder in the Copeland case, plans to claim at least fifty-five errors in his motion for a new trial. Attorney John T. Bottom has until tomorrow morning to file, with about fifty-five errors already ready and possibly seventy to seventy-five by noon today, most of them technical.

Temperatures have moderated in the northeast while overall conditions remain fair with only scattered showers from the Rockies to the Atlantic coast. River stages at La Crosse and nearby towns are expected to fall slightly over the next 48 hours.
A blaze at 2:15 p.m. destroyed warehouses of the Gowan-Per ton company in Duluths wholesale district, spreading to lumber yards and docks. Firemen and onlookers fainted from smoke but no deaths were reported as ships were driven from the harbor by tugboats and an excursion boat was moved to safety amid panicked passengers.
A construction train on the New York and North Shore Traction line struck an automobile at a grade crossing near Hempstead New York. Frank P. Jordan and Miss Edith Johnstone were killed while Mildred Hope and Louise Johnstone were seriously injured. Jordan was a cousin of author Frances Hodgson Burnett, owner of the car, initially reported as among the victims.
An army of 1500 men fights fires in northern and central Maine. Property damage exceeds half a million dollars, and officials warn the entire Maine National Guard may be called out if rain does not fall or winds do not ease. Fire reported from Moosehead Lake region and surrounds.

Washington July 13 Dr Harvey W Wiley the governments chief chemist and relentless foe of food adulterators lashed back at reports that his head would roll over irregularities in his administration. The department of agriculture committee on personnel urged resignations for Wiley Bigelow and Kebler with Busby to be discharged while Taft reviews the papers. Enemies of Wiley say he has long faced campaigns by interests opposed to his enforcement of the pure food and drug law.
The medics debate is tied to Benzoate of Soda, a board clash, and Wiley’s flour breach rulings. Taft later overrides Wiley, enabling many grain-distilled liquors to be legally whiskey, drawing heavy distiller opposition while the doctor forecasts a century-long life.
Karl Von Metz Meyer a Norwegian army lieutenant turned New York banker confessed to looting eighteen homes. He admitted stealing to entertain women lavishly and was arrested after a loving cup from Charles F. Peabody’s home on July 19. Police had tracked the case for months without suspecting him.
John Maggio a section hand and Myrtle Taylor of De Soto married in La Crosse after a license and a writ of special dispensation from County Judge John Brindley. Fires driven by winds race through timber lands north and west of Porcupine Lake, wiping out rich Dome mines and trapping workers in shafts. The death toll and losses mount as authorities warn the holocaust may be the dominion’s worst ever.
