The Senate trimmed the House tariff bill by about ten percent on average as it passed the lower chamber. The action signals a shift toward more radical tariff policy in the current U. S. Senate compared with the House's stance.
The bill was introduced in the House on April 7 and referred to the Ways and Means Committee. It moved through House caucus sessions April 7 to 21, and was reintroduced April 7. It passed the House on May 8, then Congress referred it to the Senate Finance Committee on May 16. The Finance Committee reported to the Democratic caucus on June 20, with Senate debates in the Democratic caucus from June 21 to June 27. On July 11, the Senate Finance Committee approved the bill and sent it to the full Senate.

The Rev. Felix Lazewski, a Polish priest, lies in critical condition after being shot by 18 year old Stanley Bernat in a quarrel at the Bernat home. Bernat is in custody charged with the shooting. Neighbors say the priest disciplined the boy for speaking angrily to his mother during the dispute.
