The Rt. Rev. James Schwebach bishop of La Crosse was rushed to Alexian Brothers hospital Chicago for abdominal complications physicians fear may prove fatal. Chicago friends stayed at his bedside as officials reported he rested but remained critically ill with no change in condition.
Chicago Tribune tally shows 44 deaths and 2,361 injuries nationwide from Fourth of July observances, with fire losses at $724,515. Reports detail cases in Madison, Philadelphia, Omaha, Detroit and other cities, noting gains for the sane Fourth movement and fewer deaths in major cities.

Public library will close on Thursday for several days during removal to the new building. During closure, books may be returned to either building but new books will not be issued. Notice of opening in the new building will be published in the papers.
Chinese tong clash in Manhattan draws police reinforcements. Hep Sing and Ong Leong tong factions face off as ambassadors and governors monitor the flashpoint with threats and warnings issued across Chinatown.
La Crosse man Senator Morris is viewed as a leading GOP contender for governor. Assemblyman J E McConnell voiced strong statewide support but cautioned he has no authority to pledge Morris. Hartwell, Morris law partner, says Morris should be governor if party sentiment holds, yet no formal steps have begun. Continued on page 6.
Washington July 6 The tariff bill cleared the senate committee of the whole and a 3:30 recess was taken to print amendments. Expect passage of most amendments with some requiring separate votes. Tobacco tax provisions close to final unless later changes occur. Snuff and tobacco taxed eight cents per pound. cigars over three pounds per thousand stay at three dollars, higher taxes for costly brands.
In Boston the American League opener shows pitcher RHUE with a .909 line and batteries Gray Street Wood Donahue with umpires O Laughlin and Egan. In Chicago the National League game features Lush Phelps Higginbotham Moran with umpires O Deay and Emslie and a 1 9 0 0-1 5 score line.
