New York City Chief City Clerk Herman Katz denounces a mass wedding in Prospect Park as an offensive spectacle. He vows roadblocks to prevent repeats after nine couples wed by Judge Amos Basil before about 1000 onlookers.
Thousands of teens and young adults surged through Lake Geneva over two nights, hurling beer bottles and fireworks at police, smashing windows and damaging property. Police listed 109 arrests, with most charged with disorderly conduct, as Mayor Johnejack sought National Guard support and a 1 am curfew was imposed.
The La Crosse Tribune will not publish any editions on July 4 Independence Day. No edition will be issued in observance of the holiday.
The Independence Day weekend traffic toll neared 433 dead with four days remaining. Six perished in Virginia when a tire blew on I 95 near Emporia. A severe crash on Illinois 23 killed six teens southwest of Chicago. Gov Godwin and wife in Waynesboro survived a collision. a passenger died and the governor's wife was injured.
U.S. Marines halted an infiltrating force of about 3,000 North Vietnamese regulars near Con Thien in a battle that killed 58 Marines and left 125 wounded with 34 missing. North Vietnamese losses exceeded 86. The fight featured heavy artillery, airstrikes, and naval gunfire around the DMZ in the first corps area as airfield and radar installations suffered damage and several jets were lost or rescued.
Egyptian and Israeli troops clash for a third day across the Suez Canal as the U N votes on withdrawal demands. Cairo reports tanks and armored cars destroyed while Israel says Arab forces crossed and were repelled. Both sides accuse the other of violations as U Thant weighs cease fire breaches.
A holiday traffic spike brings Wisconsins total to 452 deaths for the year 1967 up from 462 a year ago. In Calumet County a car plunged 50 feet into Lake Winnebago killing passenger Robert Seidel 43. Driver George Streubing 25 escaped to a tavern for help and Nancy Schoen 15 saved Seidel. Another fatality occurred near Amery on Highway 46 as Wayne Peterson 32 died when his car crashed into a tree. His wife and others were hospitalized.
Karen Watson 10 and her brother Gary 4 were revived at St. Elizabeth's Hospital Boston after dying from convulsions leading to heart seizures. A 24 member medical team worked to resuscitate them while hospital and state public health officials investigate the cause of the attacks.
Bobby Staats 11 of La Crosse was located by horseman Daniel Boom after a long night of searching in Wyalusing State Park. Bloodhounds joined the effort as volunteers and law officers checked trails and the Mississippi River bank. He stayed on a rock overnight, hungry but safe, with his family reuniting at camp.
