MacArthur Back in Philippines to Rousing Welcome

General of the Army Douglas MacArthur arrived in Manila to a tumultuous 500000 strong greeting. He declared I have indeed returned as crowds cheered Mabuhay General MacArthur, liberator of the Philippines. President Garcia hosted a private dinner as ceremonies unfolded with full military honors and a motorcade to Malacanang Palace.

Hemingway Dies From Shotgun Incident At Idaho Retreat

Novelist Ernest Hemingway aged 61 died of a shotgun blast at his Idaho retreat. His wife Mary found him in the living room shortly after 7:30 a.m. local time and summoned a doctor. Coroner and Sheriff said the death appeared accidental while cleaning a gun and noted Hemingway had suffered health issues including cancer and diabetes.

Paratroopers Drop At Bong AFB In Wisconsin Exercise

Nine C119 planes of the Milwaukee Air Force Reserve dropped 250 Army paratroopers from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, over the former Bong AFB in Kansasville Wisconsin. No injuries were reported and crews called the operation successful as paratroopers and equipment landed in a grassy area near the runway. Spectators watched from cars parked on the runway. Parachutists landed within the drop zone from about 2300 feet.

British troop buildup around Kuwait escalates border tension

Britain rushes paratroops and commandos to Kuwait moving advance units within five miles of the Iraqi border. Air Marshal Elworthy reports continued Iraqi force buildup despite denial, with 600 extra troops arriving from Cyprus and Bahrain. Saudi contingents also reported, while the UN Security Council weighs Kuwait's independence claims amid a looming crisis.

Mississippi River Bridge Jump Injures 18-Year-Old Girl

An 18 year old girl Judy Weaver jumped from a Mississippi River bridge injuring her back and a numb arm. The bridge stands about 65 to 70 feet above the river. She was pulled from the water by Howard Wang and taken to Lutheran Hospital.

Favors Partial Mobilization Amid Berlin Tension

Gen. Thomas D. White, retired Air Force chief, says a fair chance of war over Berlin exists and suggests partial mobilization to show the American people the stakes. Iowa man killed in homemade plane crash near McGregor

A 57 year old Iowa man died when his self built aircraft crashed after takeoff from Prairie du Chien. Lloyd Eddings of McGregor Iowa owned an archery shop and planned a test flight when the craft failed. A search party recovered his body from the wreckage in wooded terrain.

Action Urged By Goldberg

The federal government seeks a Taft-Hartley injunction to end an 18 day maritime strike affecting about 80 000 seamen. President Kennedy backed the move after a Hyannis Port meeting with Labor Secretary Goldberg and Attorney General Kennedy. The action aims to halt the walkout for up to 80 days on three coasts while negotiations continue.

Toll toll over July Fourth claims dozens in Midwest states

Drownings Claim Two Lives In Area

A 22 year old man from Waukon drowned while swimming in a pond on a Ludlow Township farm in Allamakee County. A 13 year old girl from Sumner drowned when a boat capsized on the Mississippi River near Lynxville.

Roraff Sworn In as La Crosse Small Claims Judge

Leonard F. Roraff was sworn in as the third and last judge of the La Crosse County Small Claims Court. The court will be abolished next year likely in May with a new 2nd branch of the La Crosse County Court. Roraff won the bench in April defeating incumbent Leonard Chojnacki, who had been appointed to fill the uncompleted term of John Bosshard. Helen Schwinefus was also sworn in as Small Claims Court Clerk.

Twin Cities Holiday Toll Rises With Fatal Weekend Crashes

Minnesota highway deaths climb to 312 for the Fourth of July weekend. A double fatality Sunday claimed Lyle and Phillis Waisanen, newlyweds returning from their honeymoon, in a north of McGregor crash. Curtis Barrington and Lois Barrington died when their car left Highway 16 near Houston. A wreck near Ivanhoe killed Hannah Kline and toddler Patricia Persoon at the Highway 75 19 junction.
