Charles Comeau enraged Onalaska by enlisting town marshal John Mackey to search the Hurd residence for Birdie Hurd, his fiancée who has been missing for days. Mrs. J A Hurd says Birdie fled city to escape him amid accusations of drugging.
The La Crosse booster drive moves toward a first step with tomorrow’s executive meeting at the board of trade to name committee chairs and select members. After the meeting, booster buttons will be designed and priced and widely distributed to show support for a Greater La Crosse campaign.
A carload of non union operators recruited from Eastern offices of the Western Union and Postal companies were put to work in San Francisco today. They are quartered in Pullman cars as eastern chiefs arrive. Chicago officials predict a crisis may be reached today and many operators expect to strike to cripple the Chicago center.
Robberies strike two homes on Pine and Sixth streets with missing watches cash and a pocketbook. Police trace suspects but several stories point to local youths or wandering tramps. In La Crosse Richard Lowndes a new horse bred from Cecil Bros. stock arrives with expectations for Western races and two-year-olds. the companion foal After The President is also present.
O. I. Fitz formerly with Em pire Lumber of Winona has taken the role of manager at the R. Kuhn Sash and Door company in La Crosse. He succeeds R. C. Kuhn who left the post about a year ago. Fitz brings long industry experience including fifteen years as assistant manager at Island Sash and Door Works.
The La Motorboat Club will post $95 reward signs at members boat houses today. Signs are issued by Secretary and Treasurer W W Lder, with house numbers assigned and posted at twelve inch height to be visible from afar. Also in Washington DC the Panama Canal chief engineer denied wanting to quit in a cable to Secretary Taft.
In Dalton Georgia early today a mob of twenty five overpowered the jailer at 1 30 a m and dragged Doc Posey from his cell to a bridge where he was hanged for assault on his seven year old stepdaughter who died early this morning Posey confessed before the execution
Six million bushels of July wheat delivered on contracts create a stir at the Chicago Board of Trade. Reported as the largest actual grain transaction in the market's history, with one million bushels of oats and 750 thousand bushels of corn also delivered.
Miss Isabelle McMillan of Barron Company’s millinery department was rushed to La Crosse hospital with severe blood poisoning thought to originate from a needle prick and dye. She was to begin a three month trip to Spokane Washington, but illness intervened.
Alderman Harry Palmer of the Second ward had A. Miller arrested for over driving a horse, a move described as the first known use of an aldermanic arrest in La Crosse history. Miller was released after promising to cover damages. He had rented a horse and buggy at Palmer livery on Sunday.
Madison Wis July 1 Special Governor Davidson this afternoon appointed Judge Ray S Reid of La Crosse special water commissioner for a period of three years ending July 1 1910. The office was created by the Reid waterways commission act just passed by the legislature. Reid originated the idea and helped secure support for the bill during his work with the La Crosse board of trade.
The U S Agricultural department indicts the chinch bug as a major threat to the U S bread supply. Government officials condemn the pest for widespread grain destruction and vast pecuniary losses, urging extermination to protect prices and food security.
The Market Committee and a transient merchants panel, urged by President G H Ray, meet to study sites and methods for a public market. Members include Andrew Boyd and C S Van Auken with others. A North Side Progressive league invitees discuss preferred location on the causeway between city sides.
The 10 cent special delivery postage takes effect today. Add 10 cents and write special delivery on the item to secure faster handling. without the words the mail goes regular. Mike Hayes, the drayman, secured the wagon contract for mail from the trains.
County Clerk Charles H. Rawlinson issued marriage licenses to Walter Harger and Miss Lillian Bartushek of La Crosse, and to L. E. Yeager and Miss Elda C. Glade of Bellevue Ila.
At the common council meeting this evening the board will act on issuing saloon licenses for the coming year. The current count at noon reached 148 toward a likely limit of 154. One hundred forty one licenses were paid for. last year 157 licenses were granted. Contests over licensing are not expected, though a few saloon keepers await the outcome.
A late night fire at Ludwig Coren's dry goods store caused extensive basement damage with losses estimated around 40 000 to 60 000 dollars. The blaze started in the basement during a storm, likely from defective wiring, and the fire department confined it to the basement, saving the first floor though smoke ruined most items. The loss is reportedly fully insured.
Chicago July 1 mystery baffles police after two men are killed within five minutes at Revel & Co furniture factory. Watchman John Long 72 is found with a heart wound and another in his head. J Voelkel 22 lies dead near the rear door with a heart wound. A revolver with three empty chambers lies nearby. The men were friends and theories range from robbery to a third man attack to Voelkel’s possible suicide.
In county court the state case against Charles A. Sterling for selling liquor to minors drew about a score of women from the W C T U of the North side to front seats. A misunderstanding among attorneys caused the case to be continued to next Monday at 2 pm. George B. Marvin Jr. of the North side is the complainant.

An 8 14 morning quake was reported with the severest shake from 8 20 to 8 23 north to south. The tremor was stronger than Kingston and San Francisco quakes, with distinct ground racking noted by observers. A separate dispatch from Santiago reports Rinilahus volceana erupting with boiling water columns and deadly impacts on local Indian families and cattle. Rivers were dammed and flooded by lava stones.
United States Marshal Henkel reports all efforts to locate Rockefeller have failed. He searched the area around Prenticeville and will extend the search nationwide if needed. He plans to serve the subpoena on Rockefeller, William Rockefeller, and C. M. Pratt today.
Boise Idaho July 1 Judge Wood admitted the Pinkerton detective's reports. Darrow read them to the jury. one report showed a Pinkerton operative who became president of the Globeville district cut strike benefits and blamed Haywood, claiming opposition to liberal relief. The reports argue Pinkerton controlled the federation affiliated unions and the United Mine Workers.
Springfield July 1 Governor Deneen calls for the return of all fees collected by former state auditors and treasurers over the past forty years. If any officer is deceased, his estate will be sued.
A meeting of the wharf committees will be held in the evening of July 12 to consider placing a public wharf craft. The committee already decided to recommend the plan as the expense will be evaluated.
