London crowds gathered in India House for Gandhi memorial services with prayers from Hindu Parsee Sikh Mohammadan and Christian communities. Krishna Menon called Gandhi the greatest man of all time as world officials joined in mourning.
United Nations mediation over the India Pakistan Kashmir dispute halted following Mahatma Gandhi's death. An Indian spokesman said the delegation would take no action until instructed from New Delhi. Ayyanger, the special chief delegate, may be recalled as New Delhi reassesses the Kashmir crisis in light of the assassination.
Thomas Reiner of Springdale Connecticut described moving through a stunned crowd and gripping the assassin's shoulders until Royal Indian Air Force personnel and police restrained him. He said he did not see any suicide attempt at that moment.
A. H. E. Stassen wrapped up a week long tour of Vermont New Hampshire and Maine in Brunswick Maine claiming strengthened campaign for the Republican presidential nomination. He spoke at Bowdoin College on foreign policy urging openness and no appeasement with Soviet leaders.
Fire at the Robert Dunning farm three and one half miles south of Waukon destroyed a tool shop with about 1000 dollars of tools including an electric welder. The Waukon fire department saved nearby buildings and the blaze is believed caused by an overheated stove.

Mrs Blanche Smith of Sparta confirms her daughter Mrs Gifford Moak 22 and three Moak children perished Jan 29 in a plane crash in the southern French Alps en route to Trieste Italy to join husband Chief Warrant Officer Gifford Moak. Also reports 21 total dead from two U S air crashes in Digne France including one survivor.
R J Eggert told a senate banking subcommittee that meat shortages are unlikely. He noted per person supply next spring and summer will be modestly lower than last year but overall meat availability will exceed prewar levels. Agriculture department forecasts a shortage developing in spring and worsening into summer.
Government dispatches say Communist threats to the Peiping Jehol railway in north China were wiped out by sweeping attacks. Nationalist troops from Jehol province were reported to strike the Reds on their eastern flanks between Tunghsien and Miyun, northeast of Peiping.
Orville Wright, 76, co inventor of the airplane, died in his sleep at Miami Valley Hospital Dayton after lung congestion and heart disease. He entered the hospital after a second heart attack this year and had earlier made the historic 12 second Kitty Hawk flight in 1903 with Wilbur Wright. General Joseph T. McNarney led condolences noting Wrights role in world peace and aviation. Wright, born August 19 1871 in Dayton, helped pioneer powered flight and remained shy and private despite global fame.
The army confirmed secret invasion plans for Europe were lost in transit 14 weeks before D‑Day. A sergeant in England mailed the papers to his sister in America by mistake on February 24, 1944, and they reached the United States envelope intact but bypassed censorship. The sergeant was exonerated and discharged in 1945. no names released.
Rep Knutson claims enough Democrats will back his 6.5 billion tax cut to pass 2 to 1. The House adjourned as Democrats push a 4 billion substitute funded by 3.2 billion from corporate profits. Senate talks promise further trimming to gain votes while Republicans tout relief measures and broader exemptions.
MilwaukeeWisconsin Governor Rennebohm urged uniform sentencing across the state at the Wisconsin District Attorneys Association winter conference. He warned against extra judicial actions to equalize sentences for identical crimes and urged prosecutors to boost voter turnout and counter communist influence. Donald C O Melia was elected association president with Allen C Wittkopf named secretary treasurer and several vice presidents chosen from across counties.
The American Federation of Labor accused Soviet Russia of provoking the United States and preparing for an offensive war. AFL President William Green and the 15 member executive council urged immediate strengthening of U S defenses. The group warned that Stalin's forces seek to destroy the American way of life and enable communism. The statement followed Maj. Gen. Weyland seeking labor support for an adequate air arm.
Inter-State Fair association re-elects Nustad as president and officers at Friday meeting. New board includes Floyd Jones and others, with holdovers Roellig Nuttleman Houska. Aug 4 to 8 fair dates set at the current grounds. A circus grandstand attraction planned each day. Centennial exhibit titled La Crosse's Great Centennial Exhibit. An essay contest on History of La Crosse County for students in city and county schools.
R E Nietsch campaign chairman for the 1948 March of Dimes drive says the campaign will extend two weeks due to bad weather. Residents are asked to mail coin cards to March of Dimes headquarters. Total collected is 2568 dollars 60 cents with half kept for local treatment and half sent to the national foundation for research education and emergency aid.
Doctors in Bern report Princess Troubetzkoy, formerly Barbara Hutton, suffered a relapse last night with a critical condition. A sharp temperature rise followed an intestinal operation, and another operation is being considered.
John Usher testified before a Senate subcommittee that rent control helps housing hoarders who use excess space. He urged fast removal of controls to free apartments for the current shortage and argued that ending ceilings would push hoarders back to 1941 levels or to market rents. Douglas Dorn forecast rent increases of 20 to 25 percent if controls end.

Jackson County Judge Harry M. Perry resigns after recall pressure from the Trempealeau Valley Association of Commercial clubs amid welfare department control disputes. Gov. Sega Rennebohm accepted the move citing health, family loss, and attacks. Perry had served 13 years with a term ending 1950. A successor will be chosen at the April session.
The Wisconsin River Power Company won SEC approval for an 11.5 million dollar financing plan to purchase and develop two Wisconsin River dam sites. The program earmarks 8.5 million in 2 percent first mortgage bonds and 3 million in common stock. Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. buys the bonds while Wisconsin Public Service Corporation and Wisconsin Power and Light Company each invest one half of the stock.
Charles P. Taft, a Cincinnati lawyer, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the Marshall Plan will fail if the program is grudging and half-hearted. He urged Congress not to cut historic State Department functions in operating the plan, noting some points may differ from his brother Senator Robert Taft.
All ice skating rinks in the city will be open to the public Saturday and Sunday weather permitting the park department announced.
About 30 planes comb the stormy Atlantic around Bermuda in a widening hunt for the four engine Star Tiger of British South American Airways missing with 29 aboard including Sir Arthur Coningham. The plane last contacted noon yesterday 440 miles northeast of Bermuda.

Temperatures were rising in late morning with 12 above and forecasts call for 20 to 24 by afternoon. Mild Sunday expected while Mount Washington logs 41 below and Boston three below the three year low. Government orders a 18 percent cut in fuel oil and gasoline exports due to domestic shortages.
Madison Wisconsin Central Airlines will not begin operations until February 15 instead of Sunday as originally scheduled. Executive vice president Hal N. Carr announced the change today.
