Western Sicily faced rain snow wind and fresh tremors as the January 15 earthquake toll rose to nine dead and 87 injured. Refugees crowded tent centers and open spaces while police reported Mafia buying surviving livestock at low prices. the government offered 800 to each family head who lost a home.
La Crosse University affairs committee favors the Gorder Road site for a new 700000 service and stores building to be built by La Crosse State University. Alternate sites include Main and 19th Street east of Grandview Hall and La Crosse Street west of the tennis courts. The committee urged rapid site selection, with construction planned to begin this year.
North Korea demanded the Pueblo crew be punished by law and warned of massive retaliation to any U S attack. The push to capture remnants of the assassination plot continued as shooting flared north of Seoul and battles left dozens more dead or wounded including civilians.
Navy sources say the Pueblo crew destroyed the vessel secret coding machine and North Korea gained nothing that compromises the United States. Messages from Cmdr. Lloyd M. Bucher support the claim, while other gear remained routine, including tape recorders for intercepted data.
Senate leader Mike Mansfield urged restraint and a peaceful UN Security Council settlement after North Korea seized the USS Pueblo. He warned a rash move could spark another war as debates over mobilization and incomplete facts continue, with officials noting limited details from the incident and the Pentagon confirming evasive instructions for the ship’s captain.
U S officials warned North Korea against trying the Pueblo crewmen as criminals and asked the Red Cross to seek their release. President Johnson consulted advisers while awaiting United Nations action and the recall of air reservists to respond to the seizure. Moscow discussions with the Soviet Union failed to yield a response, and the Red Cross bid was directed to Geneva. The incident is before the United Nations with no new presidential announcements planned.
De Soto Wisconsin doctor Ham ilton Bolstad aged 80 was injured when his car left Highway 35 south of De Soto, rolled down a bank and into an icy pond. Blair Spears of De Soto helped transport him to St Francis Hospital in La Crosse.
Charles Wilson, a famed British train robber, was captured in Canada, ending a 32 year pursuit led by Detective Chief Supt. Thomas Butler of Scotland Yard. Wilson escaped Birmingham prison in 1964 after a four month sentence for the 1963 mail train raid. Butler, who extended retirement to finish the case, tracked Wilson to Rigaud near Montreal with Canadian authorities.
In the 36 hours before the Tet cease-fire, Communist forces killed 21 U.S. service members and wounded 137 across South Vietnam. Attacks struck Lai Khe, An Khe, Holloway, Phu Bai, Khe Sanh, and troops near the DMZ as Marines, Army and Air Force units faced heavy bombardments and sporadic ground assaults.
