Refugees cite fear of Communist indoctrination as Cuban exodus grows
A refugee couple said they did not want their children to become Communists, a concern echoed by others as 292 Cuban children left the island Friday. Of those, 253 departed on the SS Shirley Lykes and 39 by special plane. Milagros Hernandez, 11, arrived with two dolls, Alberto and Mariquita, after fleeing Cuba with her family. Her father Osvaldo Hernandez sent the dolls from Costa Rica two years earlier for Epiphany. Milagros described disliking school in Cuba for its talk of communism and forced labor in sugar and coffee fields. Her mother Maria Gonzalez, now in New York, met her after arrival.
