Illinois congressman Henry L. Rainey charged William Nelson Cromwell and associates with a stupendous Panama Canal graft scheme. He alleged an elaborate plan to divert revenues from the canal, naming Taft cabinet figures and asserting involvement at the highest levels.
In a blistering charge the speaker accuses a broad group of individuals of stealing Panama Republic revenues. Rainey names President elect Taft and claims a vast graft network exists. He alleges a Panama Canal attorney joined an attempt to extract 2,200,000 from the United States.
In a speech Rainey targets the chief manipulator behind the 1903 Panama revolution describing a wider combine aimed at robbing Panama and the U S treasury. He accuses the administration of involvement in Panamanian affairs amid the Taft era remarks.
Secretary Root refused to surrender Christian Rudowitz to Russia finding the acts alleged in 1904 Baltic province case to be political. Rudowitz shouted joy at the decision in Chicago as officials plan a reception and a defense league coordinates support for 20,600 political refugees in the United States.
In Carpful on January 26 Remy Danvers was guillotined for murdering Mrs Donal and stealing 20 francs. A large crowd gathered in carnival mood, masks and firecrackers marking the day as he prepared for execution. The incident is described as the second guillotining in centuries following the Pollet gang.
Madison, Jan 26 The state supreme court ruled it illegal under the anti cigarette law to sell items that grant coupons for cigarette papers. A Milwaukee dealer sold tobacco with such coupons tied to the tobacco company office in New York. The decision cites the clause forbidding sale of cigarettes or the makings. The court also upheld a lower court ruling denying Fredericka Uecker sole heir status to her former husband Frederick Uecker.
John L. Utermoehl announced his candidacy for secretary of the La Crosse Board of Trade ahead of the February 2 election. Paul W. Mahoney is also running for the job. Utermoehl, publisher of the Argus on the north side, plans a south side office to handle duties. He has 13 years teaching, 10 in newspaper work, and has served as mayor of Alma, Wisconsin, and city clerk. He is well known in La Crosse and has long resided there.
New York crowds greet Captain J Sealby and Jack Binns as 600 sailors from the ill fated Republic and Baltic arrive ashore on the Manhattan revenue cutter. Buglers sound and ships whistle while the crew is carried ashore amid cheers and surging crowds.
Mrs. Eugene Lynch of Roxbury, the sole female casualty of the Republic disaster, obtained a 310000 special accident policy covering only collision deaths. The plan was arranged just before she left Boston to board the ill fated steamer, with little time for the insurer to process the policy.
Crowds cheered as sailors and longshoremen escorted the rescued heroes to company offices for interviews on the sinking. Captain Sealby and Second Officer Williams kept vigil on the bridge as the Republic listed and went down, with only them aboard after Sunday afternoon.
In Cleveland Ohio on January 26 the death of Glenn K. Shurtleff saved Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Fenn from disaster. They had planned to sail on the ill fated steamer Republic but canceled last minute after Shurtleff's death, narrowly avoiding the ship's fatal collision with the Florida.
Survivor recounts fleeing a sinking vessel as the Republic listed sharply. The crew struggled to stay aboard, slipping toward the deck edge while one mate, Williams, clung to the port rail before vanishing from view. Continued on Page 7.
Hotel Jefferson proprietor Frank Kohn filed Democratic nominating papers for alderman in the Second ward to replace Alderman Harry Palmer who will not seek re election. John Timp of the American House also filed for the Second ward supervisor seat on the Democratic ticket.
Assembly member Culberson plans a bill to reorganize the sixth, seventeenth and nineteenth circuits for relief. The bill would redraw the sixth to include La Crosse Juneau Monroe and Vernon counties and assign Clark Jackson Trempealeaun to the seventeenth and Chippewa Falls Eau Claire Sawyer and Rusk to the nineteenth.
C S Scroggins, cashier of the State Bank of Portsmouth, locked in the bank and shot himself after United States Bank Inspector Carmody reported suspected forged notes as security. Banking Commissioner Frank B. Roberts departed to lead the investigation. stockholders had pressed for action after warning to collect notes.
Return of indictments in the libel proceedings related to the Panama Canal publication is expected hourly. The grand jury concluded testimony in the examination of J. W. Whitely of New York, confidential agent of William Nelson Cromwell.
Forecasts for today show cold La Crosse at 22 up to 42 with light wind and no rain. Wisconsin remains fair tonight and Wednesday with slight temperature changes. Minnesota and Iowa also stay fair tonight and Wednesday with cooler northern portions and small temperature shifts.
President Henry Rooney of the La Crosse Professional Baseball association reports the club received 1250 from Wisconsin-Illinois league president Moll for the La Crosse franchise and players. Officials feel relieved as funds are in the treasury. A mass meeting is planned in Winona Thursday with Rooney and John Elliott among the directors. expansion hopes hinge on eight road towns joining, potentially including Winona or Stillwater if not enough towns join.
In Chicago on January 26 a canary unexpectedly spoke the phrase Du bist mein baby awakening joy for Marie Henning a widow two years after her husband’s death. She believes the bird’s words are her late spouse returning to comfort her.
Police expand hunt for the slayer of 15 year old Mary Forschner after three more attempted assaults in Dayton Ohio. Reports describe a man attacking Louise and Helen Rumpler and Burr Curtis with the mother’s screams saving them. Mary Forschner was buried today as her six sisters served as pallbearers.
Guthrie Oklahoma January 26 The McReynolds case saw Attorney Henry Asp representing Governor Haskell offer immunity to See t McReynolds in exchange for private papers seized during a warrant. Immunity under Oklahoma law may shield an agent to prosecute his employer. The hearing on seizure legality likely won't conclude today with Judge Strang to rule after arguments.
A Blaine report accuses lawmakers of 16 specific acts as the lower house votes decline. Uncle Ik needed sixty votes but faces a tight margin with 11 in the Senate. the poll suggests a 71 tally paid to elect a member.
In Madison on January 26 the senate voted 23 to 10 to investigate Senator Isaac Stephenson’s primary bid. The move follows charges by Senator Blaine citing possible criminal conduct by Stephenson and his manager Edmonds, with further votes showing Stephenson short of the 60 votes needed to secure re election.
