Two 16 year old boys confessed to breaking into meters on the Market square twice. They received suspended six month jail terms, probation to Assistant Police Chief, and ordered restitution. Four more 16 year olds were arrested on the same charges. Police say the group used a screwdriver and gained 90 cents in one night and 2.95 on a prior occasion.
The CIO United Auto Workers trimmed demands at Chrysler Corp two days before a looming strike deadline. The action would threaten production at Detroit area plants and affect supply lines across the auto sector.
In Manchester New Hampshire state prosecutors say the autopsy on Abbie Borroto 59 will remain confidential until Dr. Hermann Sander faces first degree murder charges for allegedly injecting air into her veins as she neared death from cancer. Defense counsel Louis Wyman says autopsy results will be released only as the trial begins. The body was disinterred at the defense request. The state did not seek an autopsy earlier due to embalming erasing evidence.
A relief drive is organized by Hokah volunteer firefighters for the Forschler family left homeless by a fatal fire near Brownsville Minnesota last Friday. Three died Mrs Flossie Corcoran and two grandchildren Barbara Forschier and Mary Forschier. Kay Frances Forschier survived with parents. Funeral services set for Caledonia and Brownsville.
In Sparta Wisconsin District Attorney William J Gleiss opened the murder trial of Jose Ramirez a 23 year old mental patient at Tomah Veterans Hospital on a first degree murder charge He is accused in the Oct 22 1949 killing of 81 year old Mrs Etta Hoag whose battered body was found in a Tomah garage The state presented witnesses including Frank Skrabek and Helen Healy and the jury was waived with Judge Robert S Cowie to rule on the case Ramirez was declared sane and competent to stand trial.
Paul Mantz a 47 year old speed pilot claimed a new west east coast record for gasoline fueled planes. He flew a converted P 51 from Burbank to New York in four hours 52 minutes 58 seconds over the weekend. The flight exceeded the previous best by about seven minutes and awaits official confirmation by the National Aeronautical Association.
Tomah fire department prevented a major blaze at the Sherman House on Saturday night. Faulty wiring sparked a ground floor fire that could have devastated the large frame hotel. Firefighters confined smoke and water damage to a small area as guests evacuated briefly and utility service was cut then restored. Greyhound loading shifted to a side street during the incident.
