The city board signals support for a park program with an 1810 vote. Ordinance advances to two readings, Lang and Schnell oppose. The mayor outlines a plan charging two cents weekly for half the taxpayers. Park property is cited as a city asset and economical basis in the communication.
The La Crosse city council endorses a $150,000 park bond plan funded by a one mill tax with broad citizen support and majority alderman approval. Mayor Anderson urges immediate bonding to start park improvements, arguing the tax remains tiny for most taxpayers and will boost property values.
A dramatic police chase in London ends with two bandits dead and five injured as they shoot and escape in a street car. Citizens and police pursue through Tottenham. one robber kills himself, another wounds occupants before dying.
Fire at the seminal restaurant in Princeton New Jersey began at 1 30 am and was brought under control by 4 am after a student citizen and fireman effort. President Woodrow Wilson and Dean Henry Eins directed the student fire brigades who saved the city and eight buildings were destroyed with losses over 100000. A 500000 cubic foot gas tank was saved by the student brigade.
In Jackson Kentucky on January 23 Beach Hargis the son of famed feudists ran amuck in a gun spree targeting a blind tiger and his cousin Harlin South. He fired at feet and shot dishes in a house as family hid upstairs. Authorities may hand him to the court for a second murder trial of his father.
Nashville Tenn Jan 23 Attorney General Jefferson McCain had former Sheriff Thomas Cartwright arrested on a perjury charge in the trial of the Coopers. Cartwright had testified as a juror that he held no opinion but affidavits allege he expressed belief the Coopers were justified in hitting Carmack and should be acquitted. The arrest caused a great sensation and the story continues on Page Six.
A rear end collision near Summer Hill, 11 miles east of Pittsburg, involved Chicago and St. Louis express trains No 21. Three people died and numerous others were injured as fog and signal miscommunication hindered stopping. A flagman had been sent to warn the second section.
Oshkosh club disposes of ex manager Bubeer to Rockford by order of Manager Pink Hawley. Hawley once sought La Crosse manager post. deal blocked. Hawley also pursues Schneiberg from Milwaukee in the American Association as Oshkosh holds first option at McClosky set price.
In Indianapolis on January 23 President Lewis denounced a circulating report as a lie. Delegates rejected seating McDonald by a strong vote, a setback to Lewis allies and a victory for the Mitchell-Walther camp. Lewis hinted at disclosures from national organizers and warned that “some things to show you” may come later.
Workmen dragging the lake near the crib fire scene recovered four more burned bodies. Two fell back into the water after being brought to the service tug Sabin, while the other two were landed at noon.
White Star liner Republic escaped a sudden collision in dense Nantucket fog as an unknown vessel vanished. All 461 passengers and crew are safe, while ships including the Malian Miner Florida rushed to aid. The Republic still rides the sea as efforts assess bulkhead and engine room damage.
