A Greyhound bus skidded off U.S. Highway 12 near Tomah injuring 13 with one held for observation. In Allamakee County a man, Frank Wittenberger, 51, died after collapsing during a storm. Schools statewide closed as drifting snow and high winds persisted.
Wisconsin Governor Warren Knowles urged the 1967 Legislature to set a minimum drinking age of 21 and require intoxication tests for drunken driving. He proposed 100 new state troopers, mandatory vehicle inspections, periodic driver retesting, and broader highway safety measures across 21 bills. The plan also calls for road tests after age 30, compulsory driver education, and higher license fees to fund safety programs.
An old fashioned blizzard moved into the Coulee Region causing school dismissals and opened roads only for essential travel. By Monday afternoon winds peaked at 26 to 47 mph with gusts noted, and La Crosse reported 11 inches of snow for the season. Temperatures tumbled to 16 above on Tuesday morning and to minus 20 by Tuesday night with a wind chill around minus 45.
A brutal blizzard spread from the Great Plains into Canada as Minneapolis and St Paul recorded a wind chill of 62 below zero with -20 temperatures and 17 mph winds. The Weather Bureau warned cold waves stretch from the Canadian border to Kentucky and western New York.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Adam Malik told reporters he urged President Sukarno to resign in the nation’s interest. Malik warned Sukarno to disassociate from the presidency and suggested naming a temporary leader until elections in 1968 amid the 1965 Communist coup fallout and Suharto’s rise.
Fire at the 10 acre three level McCormick Place convention hall killed security guard Kenneth S. Goodman and left estimates from 10 million to 190 million in damages. City officials vow to rebuild while opponents call the blaze a chance to relocate. Conventions flee and exhibitors seek space at Navy Pier and other venues.
