Surveyor 7 Tests Moon Soil On Final Mission Phase
From Pasadena California AP reporters say Surveyor 7 successfully activated its soil testing device on the moon. The milestone marks a full mission for the lander which touched down last Tuesday and aims for chemical analysis by trenching lunar soil with a scoop operated by the soil tester.

Marines Die In Nevada Plane Crash On Snowy Peak
Six paramedics from helicopters recovered bodies of 17 Marines with two more still missing after a crash on Mount Tobin near Battle Mountain Nevada. The remains were to be taken to Fallon Naval Air Station and then to the San Francisco Bay Area.

Beer license granted for 1968 Oktoberfest referendum proposed
The La Crosse Common Council approved a beer license for the 1968 fest by a 17 to 2 vote. Aldermen Otto and Schubert proposed a 21 age limit and an advisory referendum for April 2. The license requires tents be closed to under 21, and concerns from Wesley Church were filed with the legislation.

Common Council OKs City Hall plans and Civic Center measures
The La Crosse Common Council approved a 2.8 million City Hall project and authorized Hackner Schroeder to seek bids. Bids likely in late February. construction to start this spring and finish by January 1, 1970 within the Civic Center area. The council also authorized a 2 million dollar Health Science building and street closures within the center including Pine Badger 6th to 7th and State Vine alleys. It agreed to bid chlorinating equipment for Isle la Plume plant at about 30 thousand dollars, due by May 1. Committees were asked to draft Coleman Technical tax up to two mills for 1968 budget and decide on additional school funding.

Former Judge J Waites Waring dies at 87 in New York
Former Judge J Waites Waring, 87, who faced social ostracism in South Carolina for opening the state's Democratic primaries to Black voters in 1947, died Thursday in New York after retiring in 1952 and later moving there. He said the racial cases left him lonely.
