Republicans condemn President Truman s 39.669 billion dollar budget as extravagant and political while Democrats call it reasonable. Senate figures show defense spending of 11 billion, with some Republicans urging cuts and others defending realism. House leaders plan a 5.6 billion tax cut to offset the surplus.
Secretary of Agriculture Anderson urged Congress for standby authority to control wholesale meat prices while signaling retail ceilings may be unnecessary. He testified on an administration Barkley bill proposing hold in reserve power to impose selective price controls, with wholesale measures first and retail only if needed. Senator Sparkman predicted enactment of a standby meat rationing system this session due to rising prices and shortages.
The U S army transport Connolly carrying about 5000 empty caskets to repatriate war dead from Europe was abandoned 900 miles east of New York after an engine room fire. Rescue ships including Morrison Waite and General Callen raced to assist as coast guard coordinated efforts. The Connolly had 42 crew and one army officer aboard and had delivered 6248 World War II dead to New York last October.
Joliet police report Gordon Voss a 19 year old Joliet gas station operator was robbed of 50 dollars and beaten early today. Two men 26 year old Garland Greenwood of Mobile Alabama and 26 year old B Hanson of La Crosse Wisconsin were arrested fifteen minutes after the incident and charged with burglary. Voss identified the pair as his assailants.
Josephus Daniels 85 year old publisher of the Raleigh News and Observer and former secretary of the navy under Wilson remained in a dying condition in Raleigh North Carolina. His physician said his condition was very very low after a week of bronchitis with complications developing.
Near cold wave with clearing tonight. Temperatures fall to 8 above in the city and near zero in rural areas. Tuesday expected to be quite cold with a high near 18.

In California three Mather Field soldiers were killed in a collision at a wooden bridge near Sausalito. Staff Sgt. Robert L. Behling, 23, of Green Bay Wisconsin, was among the dead. Two other men were seriously injured.
Fifth Army headquarters in Chicago announced limited active duty training tours of one to seven days subject to availability of organized reserve funds. Reserve divisions regiments and battalions may be authorized for these short tours.
Manila report says the mourning ex mayor of Santa Lucia in northern Luzon died of heart failure after his son, believed killed in a bus accident last week, was found alive. The rescue altered the family’s grief as authorities confirmed the boy survived.
Gen Clifton Cates denied a report that Marines would be sent to protect the American consulate in Palestine. He said the Palestine situation is none of our official business and that 1 000 Marines dispatched to the Mediterranean would merely replace those already there. Admiral Halsey urged that new pages will be written this year and in the coming decade, noting Marines will be ready for the job when policy aims to guard peace.
President Truman called for reduced price support levels to curb over production while funding increased subsidies to rebuild soil worn by wartime farming. He proposed about 1.093 billion dollars in new funds for agriculture, with 1949 program expansion and higher school lunch and rural electrification spending, and sought a revised parity formula to cut overall subsidies.
Attorney General Clark orders a federal grand jury investigation into the food industry in the St Louis metropolitan area. The probe will focus on milk production distribution and high prices with four special assistants aiding U S Attorney Drake Watson. Two assistants arrive with authorization letters. grand jury to be convened immediately.
James Holbrook son of Mrs Helen Holbrook of De Soto suffered severe facial cuts and lacerations while coasting at the De Soto school on Friday Jan 9 He was taken to a physician for treatment.
Madison announced a state anti trust investigation into rising gasoline prices. Circuit court commissioner George J. Graebner issued subpoenas for the Milwaukee Retail Gasoline Dealers association witnesses and documents. The move targets possible restraints on commodity prices under state law.
A Milwaukee road locomotive boiler explosion near Arlington, Wisconsin killed Ray Hovey, 34, of Portage the fireman, and injured Engineer Walter Woodrow, 63, also of Portage. Six passengers were unhurt as wreckage left a 145 foot track gap and a four foot crater. The train ran late and cause unknown, with Woodrow escaping before collapsing.
A brief cold spell moves in tonight over La Crosse and nearby areas. Forecast lows reach eight to ten degrees above zero, with rural zero expected in surrounding regions. Grand Forks and Fargo report six below zero as southeastern winds reached 48 mph at Brice Prairie with strong gusts. The January high of 46 degrees in 1896 is not matched as Sunday’s temperature falls by six degrees from that mark.
Mrs Selmer Tranberg is confined to bed with fractured ribs after a fall on ice. Joseph Stellflue, a caterpillar tractor operator for Ettrick, is receiving treatment for a fractured great toe on his right foot from dropping a heavy iron piece on it.
Fort Knox soldier Ard Hughes aged 18 from Milwaukee died in a hospital after a car with four fellow soldiers collided with a truck Friday night near Effingham Illinois. He was en route to his Milwaukee home.
Sgt. Ralph W. Lewis of the U S Marines is on duty at the federal building room 312 to recruit for the civilian reserve and for the regular marines. He works 8 a m to 4 30 p m Monday through Saturday.
Madison Wisconsin Anthony E Madler state fuel administrator urged major Wisconsin oil firms to draft plans for voluntary allocation and rationing to ease shortages He named county board chairmen as local coordinators and asked companies with lakefront terminals to minimize railroad tank car use for short hauls and to favor trucks.
The supreme court ruled Oklahoma must immediately provide education for a Negro seeking law school training. It did not specify how to meet the requirement but ordered that the applicant be given facilities equal to those provided for white students at the all white University of Oklahoma law school.
President Truman sends Congress a 39.67 billion peacetime budget, with 11 billion for defense and 7 billion for international affairs. He projects a 7.48 billion year end surplus and debt reductions to 250.9 billion by mid-1949, but warns funds must remain high to meet international responsibilities.
Soviet authorities detained Dr. Herman B. Wells, president of Indiana University and head of the U S military government education branch, while he browsed in Berlin's Russian sector. Wells and his wife were released after intervention by American officials as tensions rise over four power control and planned council sessions.
