The Dvina, a 1773 ton Russian vessel, rode 50 foot waves off northeast Japan but was reported in improved condition. Rescue efforts continued through the night with American planes and multiple ships, as crews faced freezing conditions and dangerous seas.
Robert M. Gleason 52 of 820 Caledonia street died at Tomah after a lingering illness. He was La Crosse Rubber Mills supervisor for nearly 30 years and president of the Rubber Workers union CIO. Survived by wife Janet his mother Mrs. Barbara Gleason two brothers Raymond and Francis. Funeral at Dwyer funeral home Saturday 8 am and St James Catholic church 8:30 am. burial in Catholic cemetery. Rosary Friday 7:30 pm.
In Whitehall Wisconsin a shooting left one brother injured after an argument with Adam Biesek and Frank Biesek near Independence in Arcadia. Adam, a Plum Creek resident, reportedly fired a 25.20 lever action rifle then claims he fired in the air. Frank, with a shotgun, returned fire, striking Adam in the right side. Beatrice Biesek, Adam’s daughter, works as housekeeper for Frank. The incident occurred about 6 p.m. and was reported by 7 p.m. Arrest proceedings for Frank were planned with District Attorney Kostner.

A meeting of fuel oil dealers called by the Chamber of Commerce at the request of Mayor C. A. Beranek will be held Saturday at 10 a m in the mayor's office. The goal is to form an advisory committee on oil allocations in emergencies to receive check applications and allocate fuel to those with proven need. Two dealers said their supplies are exhausted.
John D. Jones Jr of Racine Wisconsin was reappointed yesterday as director of the St. Paul farm credit administration for a three year term. He serves on the Farm Credit board as one of seven directors of the Federal Land Bank Federal Intermediate Credit Bank Production Credit Corporation and St Paul Bank of Cooperatives.
Washington obituary for Charles Michelson a longtime Democratic press agent and former publicity chief who died at 79 after months of illness. He led the DNC press office from 1929 to 1942 promoted F D Roosevelt’s third term, previously spent 12 years as New York World Washington correspondent.
Bids on construction of 52 homes for veterans at the Salzer airport north end will open Feb 17 under the La Crosse housing authority. The $400,000 project funds via FHA loan and state veteran housing aid aims to ease the housing shortage. Contractors may bid on entire or grouped units, with alternative plans welcome if conforming to general specs. Grading and water sewer work to start after bids, as May construction begin in late spring.

A senate appropriations subcommittee will probe grain trading by Henry Morgenthau Jr., former secretary of the treasury, to determine the scope of his grain dealings and whether they date back to his cabinet tenure. Morgenthau admitted owning 195000 bushels of corn futures last June 30 and said he lost money.
President Truman is labeled a left winger by Republicans as they counter his state of the union proposals with a rival lawmaking program ahead of November. Taft plans to air Republican ideas while Democrats defend the president's domestic and health measures amid party and Wallac e tensions.

An Algerian S A T A company plane crashed into a hill near Algiers. Nine persons were killed, including two children. The craft carried two crew and seven passengers traveling from Algiers to Biskra and Philippeville when it developed engine trouble.

The Rose street extension would aid a future Black River bridge and airport road.
The Associated Press reports vast lowlands in Oregon Washington and Idaho flooded as rivers surged through scattered valleys. Five people drowned in Oregon and damages run into millions as the Willamette River crested six to eight feet above flood stage threatening Corvallis Albany and Salem with isolation of villages and widespread property loss.
