An 88 year old woman died in a Preston house fire as police investigated a related dynamite incident at the UAW headquarters. Fire damages Woolen Mills and nearby residences in La Crosse
Thursday evening a blaze swept the rear of the La Crosse Woolen Mills and Mattress Co at 1645 George Street, damaging mattresses and machinery. Officials attributed the fire to hot clinkers near a fiber board wall in the furnace room, with flames spreading to a workroom where cotton was handled. The wooden structure suffered mainly partition damage. fire crews fought for about an hour. Nearby, the How ard Alvey residence at 2900 Hamilton Street sustained basement damage from an overheated furnace, with other parts of the home spared. At 1815 Prospect Street, Truman Nickerson’s roof was damaged by fire sparked from the chimney shortly after 8 am.
