The unit captured 17 prisoners and avoided firing unless attacked, while a separate clash near Tan Hiep left 2 government troops dead and 12 wounded. Government said 101 Viet Cong were killed Wednesday and reported other setbacks including a Pleiku camp attack with 30 troops dead and 26 Vietnamese and one American wounded.
AP reporting from Washington notes the Viet Cong ambush against South Vietnamese troops on U S Army helicopters underscores persistent intelligence failures in the war. MANKATO Minn AP Mike Niflis of rural Mankato rescued Debra Risteau 8 and her sister Mary Jo 3 from thin ice on the Minnesota River. He reached Debra just as she submerged and led the pair to safety returning them to their relieved parents. Debra was treated but unharmed aside from exposure.
