Johnson signs Social Security expansion and poverty bills
President Johnson signed eight more bills completing action on 453 measures from the 90th Congress. He approved a $1.773 billion antipoverty appropriation plus $57.4 million for Appalachian development and $16.9 million for the Interior saline water program. The Great Society package also included expanded Social Security benefits and federal aid to education. Johnson named Yale economist Merton J. Peck to the Council of Economic Advisers and Arthur M. Okun to replace Ackley.

Clarence B. Sexauer 71 of La Crosse died suddenly Tuesday in a local hospital. He led Badger Corrugating Co. from 1944 to 1967 after starting the firm in 1903 with his father. Services at St. Pauls Lutheran Church Friday with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery. Memorials to YMCA YWCA or church.
