William Showen 48 former Tomah police chief died in a La Crosse hospital after carbon monoxide inhalation from a faulty gas furnace exhaust. He and his wife were asleep in their Tomah home when fumes began Friday night. He served in the Air Force 13 years then led Tomah Police from 1961 to 1967. Surviving are Irene and three daughters. The White Funeral Home handles arrangements. Government news from Madison notes governors Rockefeller Romney Philip contest and ballots in Wisconsin primary.
Rep. John W. Byrnes says Army Engineers will reexamine an all-weather port at the tip of Door County Wisconsin to aid Washington Island. Officials previously said mainland improvement was not economically feasible but will review costs and benefits of a North Port project as a potential lifeline serving up to 4000 residents.
Nixon aides say Romney's exit from the Republican presidential race signals a possible bid by Nelson Rockefeller. Nixon contends Romney's step aside shows strength, while Buchanan notes the party now awaits Rockefeller as a chief rival in the primaries and election outlook for November.

Bangkok AP reports Lt Col Felix Blanchard former Army football star now flies F105s from Korat Air base in Northeast Thailand. Two mid-40s teammates Lt Col Max Minor and Lt Col Arnold Tucker, former Army quarterbacks, also serve in Asia. Blanchard nicknamed Mr Inside and an All American full back.
Four Africans deported by Zambia and refused entry to Rhodesia have been stranded for five days on a Zambezi River bridge. They lack identity papers, and Rhodesia requires proof of nationality. A government spokesman said the men claim Rhodesian status to justify entry. Rhodesian border officials suspect links to nationalist groups and report the men in poor condition without shelter or food.
President Johnson and Defense Secretary McNamara closed his seven year tenure with a rain soaked Pentagon farewell marred by a stuck elevator and failed PA system. A 19 gun salute followed as McNamara, hatless in the rain, walked from the ceremony with the President and remarks of gratitude echoed despite the chaos.
Biographical sketches of the 24 candidates for nine seats on the La Crosse City District Board of Education appear on Page 17. The primary is March 5 reducing candidates to 18, and April 2 voters will elect nine for staggered terms. Previously the Common Council appointed members, voters approved an elected board referendum last April.
