Pfc Vollmar Reported Dead in World War II Service
Pfc Robert D Vollmar 20 son of Mr and Mrs Ray Vollmar 1701 service June 8 died after five weeks at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri sent to Fort Meade Maryland and to England in April 1944 with the Second Division he was a machine gunner in the 1st and 9th armies and part of the D Day invasion force at St Lo Brest earning the expert infantry combat badge and the bronze star. He helped carry wounded under fire then sought aid for them. Born La Crosse January 16 1924 he graduated Aquinas High School edited Aquinas News and was class president box and debate enthusiast and good citizenship medallist. He is survived by his parents and two brothers David and James SS Lou and Pac. Funeral Mass at St Joseph's Cathedral 8 am Monday.
