Melvin Hazaert of Green Bay loaded a Liebmann Packing Co. rig in Philadelphia. A hitchhiker posing as a stranded driver hijacked the truck at the Ohio Turnpike Elyria interchange. The pistol misfired when held to Hazaert’s head, and the hijacker fled with the tractor-trailer at the Norwalk interchange before being captured two miles west of Lorain. The suspect was identified as Charlie Mitchell, 36, with multiple addresses including a Cleveland hotel.
A Newburyport effort to rehouse the Genna family of 11 after their Plum Island blaze grew into a community project.
