Fifteen American youths from Indiana, New York, and Texas toured Germany for sixteen days, meeting officials and locals with breezy prairies manners. They shared farm tales, saw both wealth and poverty, and urged continued dairy aid as they witnessed German conditions firsthand.
In Madison Wisconsin the assembly approved the prohibition bill 52 to 41 and sent it to third reading. Four amendments by Matheson and Hanson passed, wets' amendments failed. Debates centered on federal alcohol definitions and enforcement funding, with a rejected referendum attack and a tied vote on a final amendment.
Maj Gen Alexander McKenzie U S retired Army chief of engineers known in La Crosse and Milwaukee area dies in Washington at 77. Survived by daughter Mrs Hendler of Washington. Funeral planned for Milwaukee. McKenzie supervised river improvement work and volunteered for active duty during World War I.
Five thousand visitors attend the school work exposition opening on Wednesday. Today's program at 7 30 in the auditorium features Kindergarten band Webster school piano solo Mildred Lockman Falstaff Dramatic society violin solo Ruth Nustad folk dances Hamilton school literary character English department piano solo Frances McDonell Nete program repeated at 9 in the gymnasium school Lincoln and Wishiere junior high school choruses.
Hixon Gymnasium hosts a high school handicraft exhibition with booths from the vocational program and displays from all departments. More than 5,000 visitors attended the event, praised by Superintendent McCormick as the finest yet, with plans for annual or biennial repeats. The program featured the Jefferson kindergarten band, micro musical pieces, gymnastic displays, and dramatic performances, spanning Wednesday afternoon to Friday night.
At the monthly Chamber of Commerce luncheon the merchants’ bureau accepted the carnival committee report and voted to entrust next year’s event to the same committee. New Standard Oil manager J. M. Lambert and H. L. Ayers of the Tistinia Milling company attended as guests. Three La Crosse traveling men, including Charles Hunt, spoke on business outlook. The bureau set March 10, 12 and 12 for the spring opening and agreed to stage a style show in the spring with details forthcoming.
A daring heist occurred Thursday at the Bank of Montreal head office in Toronto. About $20,000 in cash and $11,000 in securities were stolen from a box in the paying teller’s cage.
Washington to continue inquiry into the La Crosse air mail crash that killed three men as Post Office data on all metal planes remains insufficient. The Newton resolution extends the hearing to Friday amid ongoing concerns.
Seventy persons convicted of violating the prohibition act and several charged with other offenses faced the Milwaukee court. A March 4 sealed bid by the state commission seeks surfacing work on the La Crosse Sparta road under federal aid project No. 28, with a related meeting planned March 5 involving state and local highway officials.
Fargo X D reports Anti-Nonpartisan League members plan to decide if sentiment across the state warrants recalling nonpartisan officials including Governor Frazier and Attorney General Lemke. In California, Rev. J C Sartekin was acquitted of manslaughter related to the Beverly Trumble shooting in Sandwich, with the jury retiring the verdict after forty-two minutes.
City meeting set for 8 pm at the Chamber of Commerce to discuss city property taxation and assessments with aims to propose corrections of inequalities. Called by H K Taylor and Ori J Sorensen, the gathering echoes a 1920 event and will be chaired by the attendees' choice. A 200-member conference of 109 American labor organizations led by President Gompers demands a labor rights bill and vows to refuse to obey injunctions in industrial disputes. Thomas Southworth Ives a longtime lumberman, born in Brooklyn in 1833, died at his residence 1205 Main Street after a brief illness. He moved west at 17, built a large Iowa lumber business, retired in 1907, and leaves a widow and daughter Gertrude.
A rider known as Pioneer Pony Express, one of America's early 011 riders, is reported dead in Springfield Massachusetts. Mer Nailor's career is noted with origin in Berlin Wisconsin in 1867, while tax rules extend time for payment as Madison assembly suspends rules. Governor Maine expected to sign soon to enact the extension.
Lieut. W. D. Coney began his ocean to ocean flight from Love Field Dallas at 10 14 PM Central on Wednesday night. He landed near Camp Johnson Jacksonville at 7 27 AM Thursday morning, covering 2079 miles in 22 hours 32 minutes at an average over 98 mph. The flight from Dallas to Jacksonville was mostly in darkness except for two hours. Coney aims to return Jacksonville to San Diego by daylight with a stopover at Texts point.
