Prominent Shelby farmer C August Moonstock was found guilty of heartless cruelty to Adolph Arthur Hubert a 15 year old orphan. The boy endured seven years of beatings with pitchforks clubs and a milk stool leaving scars and a broken hand. Moonstock admitted his brain got heated and offered little defense. He was fined 75 dollars and the boy removed from his custody. The case prompted concerns of past lax punishment for a wealthy local farmer.
