He will follow John Glenn Jr in a three orbit mission with different assignments to collect more data. Backup pilot Walter Schirra Jr and others await launch duties as plans call for three or four more one man three orbit flights this year and Gemini missions next year. Slayton, born in Sparta Wisconsin, has 3600 flying hours and 2200 jets. Schirra, a Navy graduate from Honolulu, has 3200 hours and 2000 jets.
