Circus Lion Kills Tiger at Clyde Beatty Show

Detroit reports a Clyde Beatty circus incident where Prince the African lion killed Sheban the royal Bengal tiger during a Shrine Circus act. An audience of 3000 schoolchildren watched as Prince leaped, jaws clamped, and Sheba died shortly after. A roustabout fired a blank through cage bars to provoke the lion.

Beatification Clears Way For Pius X

Vatican City reports the Congregation of Rites unanimously approved the final decree for Pope Pius X’s beatification in St Peter’s Square likely this June. The vote also approved beatifications for Julian Maunoir in October and 25 martyrs who died in Tonkin in 1862, with dates set for April 27.

LANSING Mich Rich ard C Shay the teen aged father who set the 4 5 million State office building fire Feb 8 pleaded guilty to arson Monday Shay 19 former state highway department employee faces a possible maximum prison term of 10 years Sentence was deferred in circuit court pending a probation report Married and father of a seven months old daughter Shay said he set the fire in hopes of escaping the army draft by acquiring a criminal record He said he meant to start only a small blaze.

Gide, Nobel Winner Dies. French Author Wrote 50 Books

Paris reports Andre Gide died of pneumonia Monday night at his bed side with daughter Catherine and son-in-law Jean Lambert present. Born November 22, 1869 in Paris, he won the 1947 Nobel Prize in literature and produced more than 50 books including The Counterfeiters The Immoralist and Pastoral Symphony. His Journals broadened his audience and his Nouvelle Revue Francaise influenced French letters for three decades.
