Dr B F Holmes reports 29 of 25 dairy cows at John E Hauser’s North Salem Road farm affected with tuberculosis, with milk from the herd previously sold to city milkmen. State Veterinarian David Roberts to visit La Crosse for investigation and action.
A circuit court jury awarded Herbert J. Coolidge ten thousand dollars for the loss of sight from an eye injury caused by a Street Railway conductor on the George street line. He sued for twenty thousand, seeking damages for blindness and related consequences after seeking specialists in La Crosse, Milwaukee, and Chicago. The verdict, reached after midnight and sealed at 9:30 this morning, found negligence and a natural probable consequence of the injury.
Work has started on the John Kindley residence on Merket street between Eighth and Plinth streets. The ground floor will be refinished and a bay finish installed. The second floor will be remodeled and the building will be one of the prettiest residences in the city when completed.
Ligonier Indiana February 20 The American car in the Nework Paris race reached Kendallville early today with the French car close behind Farmers along the route shoveled drifts away from the Americans but refused to aid the foreigners.
J. Dunning a traveling piano dealer was arraigned before Judge Hunt in police court and fined 27.50 for violating city ordinance. He advertised a mahogany finished piano “to be sold at once” as he left the city, but the pianos were described as inferior to the advertised quality. He moved through three places in a few days selling pianos as a transient merchant.
Springfield reports the Illinois Supreme Court affirmed Herman Billik’s murder conviction of the Uzral family in Cook County. The court postponed ruling on the certiorari writ against Judge McEwen of Chicago to the next term.
In Harrisburg on February 20 former Governor Pennypacker faced sharp cross examination over the capital scandal. He denied any attempt to cover up wrongdoing or to whitewash anyone as former Auditor General Snyder followed as the next defense witness.
Fire department No 3 responded to a chimney fire at the residence 468 Jackson Street this morning. No damage occurred and residents were safe.
Madison reports praise for Wisconsin and National Consumers' leagues efforts to improve labor conditions for women and children and strengthen pure food laws. Mrs. Gudden urged renewed activity, noting gaps in child labor laws and the need for stronger protections and broader support for suffrage and defense in labor cases.
Senator Ashbury Churchill Latimer of South Carolina died at Providence hospital after an appendicitis operation. A native of Lowndesville in Abbeville County, Latimer rose to prominence as a farmer boy who built a political career. He died this morning in Washington D C.
Born July 351 1851 he grew up on a farm and trained as an agriculturist. He studied at common schools and married Sara Alice Brown. A leader of the 1876 movement he moved to Belton South Carolina in 1880 to farm. He served in the U S Congress from 1893 to 1903 and then joined the upper chamber. His home remained in Belton.
Lima Peru February 20 Admiral Evans fleet arrived at Callao in a single file formation. Never before has there been such a turnout in Callao. Festivities include a holiday honoring the visitors.
T B Lawrence resigns as local agent of American Express in La Crosse after a long career starting in Minneapolis in 1870. He plans rest and possible future work while remaining a resident. F M Atwood succeeds as Fond du Lac local agent and arrives with his wife to assume duties.
St Petersburg February 20 The military court found General Stoessel guilty of capital negligence for surrendering Port Arthur to the Japanese but did not impose the sentence. He had claimed sole responsibility and asked for the death penalty.
In Indianapolis a blood stained attic reveals the killing of William Barrows, a city official, by a neighbor who shot him after hearing screams from Mrs. Reichert. Barrows, a Shrine and Odd Fellows member, allegedly funded a romance with Reichert’s wife and left a note for Reichert explaining the act. Mrs. Reichert denies any intimacy with Barrows.
District Attorney Otto Bossard escorted George Marchand the missing legacy grafter to Waupun where he will serve a four year prison sentence. The incident marks a notable transfer as the convicted offender begins serving the term.
The will of the late Rev J K Fowler former pastor of the Presbyterian church was filed in probate this morning. It leaves two thirds of his estate to his widow and the remaining third to be divided equally between his two daughters Katheryn Fowler and Mae C Shearer.
Directors of the La Crosse board of trade will meet at 4 o clock this afternoon to organize members and decide dues for 1908. They will not vote on a new president at this session, Secretary A A Bentley said.
Representative Waldo of New York urged immediate impeachment of Judge L. R. Wilfrey of the federal court in Shanghai Missouri for malpractice and corrupt conduct. He sent articles of impeachment to the desk and asked the House to direct the judiciary committee to act.
Michael Finn was examined for insanity by Drs. George W. Lueck and Lester of Onalaska and found insane. He was sent to Mendota today. He is prone to severe spells and has worked as a brakeman on the Burlington road, living at 172 Wood Street.
The rotary snow plow of the Chicago & Northwestern railroad was dispatched to Baraboo last evening to aid the line between Madison and Galena where deep snow blocks traffic.
Pierre February 20. The annual vital statistics report says in the past decade the current divorce laws have brought five million dollars into the state. The figure is cited as why opponents push to retain the laws.
In Chicago on February 20 Superior Judge Ball upheld the right of the Union Pacific Securities Company of New Jersey to own and vote stock in the Illinois Central, a decision affecting about one hundred Illinois corporations and resolving the Harriman Fish fight over control.
The court dissolved Fish's temporary injunction and ruled that the Securities Company of the Union Pacific owns the shares in the Illinois Central and has the right to vote them at the upcoming stockholders meeting. The decision ousts Fish and affects nearly one hundred great Illinois corporations.
The report lists yesterday’s temperature extremes Huron zero and Los Angeles 66. Forecasts today call for fair conditions in Wisconsin Minnesota and Iowa with slight regional warmth. Light rain or snow affects central and eastern stations this morning while Missouri and Mississippi valleys shift temperatures. High pressure from the gulf to the north Pacific coast will maintain fair weather tonight and Friday with no major temp changes.
