Student pilot survives light plane crash near Onalaska

Witness Erwin Schupple described a Cessna 150 crash landing in a swampy area west of Onalaska after engine trouble. Bill Burton 21 of Sturgeon Bay, UW La Crosse student, was unhurt as the plane nosed over in high swamp grass with minor damage.

Youth faces adult trial for two armed bank and store robberies

Galesville 17 year old Kevin T. Wood is bound over in La Crosse County Court on charges of robbing Skogen's IGA Foodliner in Onalaska on December 4 and Home Savings and Loan in Holmen on December 17 while armed and masked. A preliminary hearing is set for Thursday with bond at 25 000 on each count. The judge waived juvenile court jurisdiction saying rehabilitation by his 18th birthday is unlikely and noted he may be treated as a youthful offender if convicted in adult court.

Iowa bill would require drinkers to carry a license

Iowa Representative Terry Durland of Elkader proposes a drinker's license for all residents 18 and older. The license would be granted by the Iowa Beer and Liquor Control Board only to those with no prior alcohol offenses and could be revoked after three violations. Durland chairs the House subcommittee on substance abuse and aims to raise awareness of alcohol abuse while noting enforcement challenges. The measure is slated for introduction in the Iowa House in early March.

CIA secret payments to world leaders revealed in manuscript

A still secret manuscript names King Hussein and five other leaders as CIA beneficiaries. The book was edited to hide the passages after a court action. The Post reported Hussein received millions of dollars over two decades with annual payments shrinking to 750000 last year.

Nonrenewal hearing for McKee set for Friday

The La Crosse Area Public School District Board of Education scheduled a nonrenewal hearing for Longfellow Principal Myron McKee at 4 p.m. Friday in the Washburn School Auditorium. The board approved the date after a brief closed session and received a bill of particulars detailing eight allegations spanning 1976 and 1977.

Collins-La Crosse Sign Corp is sued by neighbors Linda Paulson and Douglas Vinson over a McDonald's sign on Olivet Street. They seek removal and a ban on new signs, but withdrew the injunction after a town sign ordinance. The firm argues the law does not guarantee an unobstructed horizon view.

Demolition planned for La Crosse Post Office site

Between May 1 and June 10 Dombe Contractors Inc. will raze the old La Crosse Post Office at 4th and State to clear space for a new 106 600 square foot building with a 16 500 square foot parking structure. The project follows a contested historic preservation debate and includes traffic and safety measures such as street closures pedestrian guards and police aides during demolition.
