Acme News pictures will appear in Tuesdays La Crosse Tribune via a nationwide network. The Tribune will use an Acme Transceiver to transmit and receive telephoto images, delivering world wide newsphotos quickly for print.
London officials dismissed Stalin’s accusation that Britain and the United States threaten peace. In a five page note, Prime Minister Attlee’s government rebutted Moscow’s charges and defended West German rearmament, listing 14 points of alleged Russian obstruction and subversion.
Former President Hoover refused a direct invitation to testify at a joint Senate foreign policy hearing on sending American troops to Western Europe. Hoover, at Key West, said he would appear later only if committees first secure more fundamental information from experienced independent sources. Dewey accepted the invitation to present views at the hearings. Senator Taft offered contrasting remarks on the matter.
Washington sources report that U S military leaders believe the Eighth Army can stay in Korea even if China sends up to a million more troops. Generals foresee heavy costs for a broader invasion and expect the danger to rise in late spring as terrain changes aid concealment for Chinese forces.
Chinese and North Korean forces pressed a new push on Chechon in central Korea driven by two divisions with support nearby. Allied defenders, including American and ROK troops, fought to hold the line as lead elements reached within three miles before counterattacks drove the attackers back two miles.
Chinese forces pulled back along a 36 mile arc in west central Korea from Ichon to Wonju after a bloody setback. An Allied officer called the central front retreat a potential turning point while noting the Chinese had not been defeated for a long time.
American officers report North Korean second corps regrouping 8,000 to 10,000 men moving southeast toward Chechon from Wonju hills. They say allied air and artillery counterattack behind a heavy bomber and fighter mission halted the Red advance, with Chechon 20 miles southeast of Wonju and Pyongchang abandoned as UN forces withdraw along the front.
The CIO Textile Workers Union of America policy committee said on Saturday it would keep the nationwide wool and worsted strike going until its demand for a 15 cent hourly raise and other benefits is met. An American Woolen company spokesman denied the charge that the industry is bypassing collective bargaining. The dispute affects about 70,000 workers in 160 mills, with average wages around 1.42 dollars per hour.
Charles A. Beranek a former mayor and 1311 South 15th Street resident announces a bid for mayor in the April 3 city election. Alice A. Dickson deputy city clerk for 24 years seeks city clerk, while Burl A. Holzer of 607 North 10th Street runs for city treasurer in the same election.
President Truman toured the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland to view the army’s latest weapons, including a new eight inch motorized gun, the T-41 light tank, and experimental infantry arms, and he spoke of peace while dining with enlisted men.
Ed ward Tkach also known as Baron Eduard Fran Rothkirch was held in Minnesota on a Wisconsin forgery warrant. He faced questioning on a dynamite find as federal authorities planned to join. He is wanted in Eau Claire for issuing worthless checks signed F. F. Carlson and previously announced a European college project.

In Beaufort South Carolina on Lady's Island three white male quartet members were shot to death as they rehearsed in a car before dawn. A lone figure approached questioned them then shots from a .45 ended their lives. a fourth man in the car survived and helped summon aid. Officers later detained Smith Harvey, with bloodhounds tracking to his home. Harvey claimed innocence.
The La Crosse County Chamber of Commerce annual meeting dinner will feature Dr Allen A Stockdale known as the Pitching Parson from his Boston University theology days. He has led pastorates in Boston Chicago Washington and Toledo and played amateur baseball in college.
The U S state department denounced Stalin’s Pravda interview as one more misstatement denying Soviet responsibility for aggression in Korea and urged that Stalin show proof by allowing UN observers free access to Russia. Congressional leaders warned the move demands immediate US defense readiness amid East West tensions.
Sgt Leon Vertz recounts a Chinese siege at Chipyong Korea from a two-nose hill position. Three cows set off trip flares and the attackers pressed waves of assault, but BAR fire and a cross fire from another position repelled them. Forty five enemy dead were counted and the defenders held.
