His father Walter Hermann of Whitehall accepted the award from Maj G C McCall. Hermann born March 7 1928, inducted Oct 27 1950, served nine months in Korea prior to death. his brother Melford also in Korea at the time.
On New Year’s Day Chinese forces engaged Allied troops in a five hour clash near Old Baldy Hill in Korea. A Sabre jet pilot from Texas downed a MIG to become a double ace. Col. Royal Baker of McKinney led Sabre patrols ending a six day non scoring stretch. The fight involved 17 F 86s against 27 Chinese jets with 70 Chinese casualties reported. Allied reinforcements were halted briefly but defenders held ground as heavy fire drove Reds off before dawn.
A temporary injunction halts La Crosse city actions from proceedings tied to a police officer James D. Christie investigation. The order targets the mayor, police chief, city attorney, and 21 others, blocking new police and fire commissions and restraining records transfer. The defendants must appear for adverse examination on February 25.
