143 POWs Return From Vietnam Fronts At Clark Air Base
A total of 143 prisoners of war arrived at Clark Air Base Philippines after release from North and South Vietnam. Most are in good condition and examined by 60 doctors. The first 116 came from Hanoi on three hospital planes, followed by 26 from Loc Ninh and Saigon. The group included Lt. Cmdr. Everett Alvarez and Navy Capt. Jeremiah Denton Jr. The return trip involved delays and tense exchanges with Viet Cong prisoners and involved exchanges for 1 035 South Vietnamese prisoners.

Two Wisconsin POWs among first freed in Vietnam airlift
The Associated Press reports two Wisconsin servicemen were among 143 POWs released and flown to Clark Air Base in the Philippines. Lt. Col. Daniel J. Doughty of Ladysmith and Maj. Raymond C. Schrump Jr. of Tomahawk were freed after years as prisoners in North and South Vietnam, with Doughty’s release on the final C141 flight and Schrump’s delayed release finally approved. Doughty’s wife Theresa and mother described the emotional relief, and Schrump’s family in Fayetteville and Tomahawk prepared for his return as prayers were answered.
