Washington report says national guard divisions may receive non combat assignments if sent abroad. Four divisions federalized last year and two more recently trained about 30 percent of regular units. Training under field conditions will take months to reach corps or army level. Duties likely shift to training and support roles for now.
Washington officials said meat prices may edge up for a week or two after the January 25 freeze date but the increases should be limited. OPS notes ceiling prices reflect the peak Dec 19 to Jan 25 period, with wholesale meat prices up 3.2 percent for the week ending February 6.
The army transferred the Pearson McCarthy dispute to the justice department after failed efforts to identify sources for Pearson’s column quoting secret Defense data. Pace reported the preliminary inquiry ended with negative results and McCarthy’s questions led to the case being handed over for further investigation.
The 35th annual La Crosse County Chamber of Commerce meeting on February 20 at Hotel Stoddard will feature the presentation of the Chamber president's citation for outstanding civic service. The 1951 recipient joins a select group, with past winners including Dr. Frank J. Hoeschler in 1947 and Mrs. Alf Gundersen in 1950.
Army Chief of Staff General Joseph L Collins visited Camp McCoy in Wisconsin meeting officers and troops. Virgil Jensen twelve is killed and James Dahl fifteen is injured when a horse bolted after a Milwaukee road train and struck an Illinois man’s auto trailer on highways 12 and 16 near New Lisbon. Dale Jensen fourteen watched as his horse fled. Funeral plans for Virgil set for Lone Rock Baptist church.
Milwaukee district will keep control over 20 counties with about 54 percent of the population. Green Bay office will oversee 51 counties with about 46 percent of the population, including all counties north of Vernon, with an acting director not yet chosen.
Louis Berman longtime operator of Ber mans store in La Crosse died Thursday in Los Angeles. He is survived by wife Mollie, daughter Claryce Maybaum, and two sons Chester and Arthur. Funeral services set for Sunday noon at Chapel Beth Olem Hollywood Calif.
Mostly cloudy and warmer conditions expected with Sunday highs around 36 degrees in the afternoon. Light winds and no precipitation are anticipated, with gradual clearing later in the day.
Green Bay officials say the air raid alert setup for Wisconsin and upper Michigan is inadequate after the first day of a two day defense drill. 254 volunteers manned the Green Bay center with about 200 observation posts reporting from Michigan and northern Wisconsin.
Blair high school won the sectional forensic crown at Stevens Point with a clean sweep earning a trip to Madison. The southern foe Tiny Blair led as Blair defeated Menasha Ripon Neenah with Barbara Osgood and Viola Otterson on the affirmative and Soren Arberg with Verdel Kolve on the negative beating La Crosse Kaukauna and Clintonville.
The United States and Japan outline provisional post treaty security terms as John Foster Dulles and Shigeru Yoshida announce American protection will follow the peace agreement. Both sides express overwhelming support for U.S. armed forces stationed in Japan and a mutual defense arrangement without a set time limit.
John J. Erickson 1217 South 20th Street teller at Batavian National bank announced his candidacy for city clerk in the April 3 election. Current clerk Fred L. Kramer resigns effective April 17. Erickson, born July 27 1909 in La Crosse, has long bank and civic ties, with two daughters and wife Margaret Surdick.
Wisconsin legislators anticipate a tough path for Governor Kohler’s tax program as they near the formal bill for re enactment of the 25 percent state income surtax. Doubts run strongest in the senate where conservatism guides taxation and spending. Public concern over taxes at Washington spills over, making a decision likely to be delayed for weeks.
Senator Taft condemned President Truman for thoughtless and reckless decisions to send U S forces to Europe without congressional authorization. Speaking at an Illinois Republican Lincoln Day dinner, Taft questioned public faith in Truman's judgment and urged restraint on budget and rail union policy.
Senator Connally charged the Hoover air-sea defense plan would leave Europe open to communist conquest and questioned sending troops to bolster Western Europe. Senator McFarland condemned Republican critics as defeatist and said they do not represent America.
Taft denounces the Fulbright report and warns that surrendering power to the president would let him snap judgment on millions of American soldiers. He argues Congress and the public must authorize foreign commitments and presses for European divisions to balance US forces. Hoover’s policy echoes Taft on limited Atlantic pact roles and broader military buildup. He notes US share of world population cannot justify global supremacy in all military domains.
Labor unions gain a stronger role as Eric Johnston appoints George M. Harrison, president of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks, as his principal assistant. The move could ease Johnston’s task in securing cooperation amid a tense economic control situation.
