The nation east of the Rockies endures ice sleet snow freezing rain tornadoes fog hail and floods in a severe spell. Millions face disruption as transportation and commerce halt and many suffer injuries from slick roads and crashes. Schools close and travel slows nationwide.
Wintry weather battered the Coulee Region with heavy snowfall and high winds. Eight inches fell by Tuesday noon adding to a prior six inches as snowdrifts grew and schools halted operations across multiple towns including New Albia Lansing Caledonia Brownsville and Mabel. Roads were impassable and buses ran late with many districts closing for the day.
A fast moving tornado struck St. Louis at 2 12 am causing extensive destruction across Brentwood Crestwood and inner city areas. Seventeen people were confirmed dead with 265 injured including 55 seriously. Authorities warned the toll could rise.
La Crosse Works of the Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Co requests immediate negotiations for a complete labor contract covering employees represented by Local 401 UAW AFL CIO. A telegram to Local 401 president Norman Elstad, from La Crosse Works negotiation chair George A Sarazin, notes this as the third company request. The telegram criticizes a Feb 2 strike called during a severe winter, affecting over 700 workers including many recently returning to A C.
The tornado struck west central St Louis early today with a blue flash and a terrible roar. Vendors and tavern patrons described smashed buildings, collapsing walls, and people trapped as boats of debris blew through the Bohemian district and nearby rooming houses.
La Crosse residents saw two inches of snow early Tuesday with winds adding drifts as the Board of Public Works tackled keeping streets passable. City officials expect several thousand dollars in costs for plowing and salting to restore downtown streets before traffic norms resume.
Nine Negro children entered three previously all white public schools in Alexandria under court order with police presence but no incidents occurred. The move marks Alexandria as the third Virginia community to integrate since Massive Resistance collapsed. Police with about 60 to 65 officers guarded Ramsay Elementary Theodore Ficklin Elementary and Hammond High School as students aged 6 to 11 walked in quietly.
A major snow and sleet storm battered Wisconsin with winds up to 40 mph, closing schools and blocking highways. The Fox River Valley and lake shore areas bore the impact, with Sheboygan hardest hit as buses were pulled and stores closed. Green Bay, Fond du Lac, Oshkosh and Madison reported multiple closures and drifting roads.
In Washington, President Eisenhower’s five year school aid bill draws bipartisan criticism as lawmakers say it does not move fast enough. Senator John Sherman Cooper supports the plan but questions elementary construction need. Senator Pat McNamara also calls it inadequate. Secretary Flemming defends the program, noting deficits would be financed and that $5.6 billion is needed for 140000 classrooms now.
President Eisenhower predicted Dulles surgery would not delay Western efforts with the Soviets on German issues. Dulles, 70, entered Walter Reed for a hernia operation, expected to keep him out for weeks, with officials hopeful he will return to help shape U S policy on Germany. Undersecretary Dillon acts, Herter to relieve him on Sunday.
