Mail and Railway Express Service returned to near normal as a major 10 day strike ended. The Post Office directed offices to resume normal service and lift embargoes especially in 14 northeastern states. Army pressure to fire strikers helped end the stoppage with Chicago as a key return center.
Postmaster Wenzel M. Dvorak announced the embargo on almost all out of state mail from La Crosse ended at noon Friday. First class and air parcel post were still restricted to minimum weights while newspapers and emergency materials moved as usual. Dvorak urged mailing Valentine presents early to ensure delivery.
Engineers searched the wreckage of the six story Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing minerals building after a Thursday blast, which leveled sections of the plant and shattered windows within eight blocks. At least 11 men died and more than 50 were injured, with four in critical condition.
Wisconsin endures its worst cold spell since 1935 36 with La Crosse at 22 below and Tomahawk Mer cer Rhinelander and Land O Lakes between 40 and 42 below. Forecaster Sanial predicts a partly cloudy night and a brief warmup to near five below by Saturday with a high around 12 above on Saturday.
Mrs. Edna Hanson a 29 year old Sparta farm woman was committed to Mendota state hospital for 30 days to undergo mental observation after being charged with assault of a depraved mind in the beating of her child. The judge deferred further action pending test results as the maltreated child was reported to be recovering.
A 24 year old Irish workman underwent surgery for peritonitis. Inside his stomach lay a bicycle axle six inches long a twist drill three and a half inches a bicycle wrench five inches a steel spring three inches and a hacksaw fragment three and a quarter inches. The patient recovered with both mental and physical health returning to normal.
A Minneapolis driver, Roy Sorenson, was killed when his Werner Transport tractor-trailer left Highway 146 South of La Moille Minnesota around 2 am Friday. Henry Beezley of Chicago sustained minor injuries and was jailed after investigation. Damages were listed at 1400 dollars for Sorenson’s truck and 1300 for Beezley’s.

A 23 year old woman, Dorothy Mae Stevens, was found frozen in sub zero cold near a Chicago apartment. Doctors at Michael Reese Hospital report her heart and brain function intact but fear loss of both arms and legs. Her recovery remains uncertain with four to five days needed to judge viability.

La Crosse lawyer Raz y Kletecka Chojnacki died at a local hospital Thursday night just hours before her 30th birthday. She was a pioneer as La Crosse’s only woman attorney and part of a rare husband wife legal pair in the city. She attended St Joseph's and Aquinas High School, studied prelegal work at La Crosse State Teachers College, and graduated from Marquette University in 1943. She practiced law with Frank E. Withrow, later partnering with her husband Leonard R. Chojnacki. She belonged to multiple bar associations and civic groups. She is survived by her husband, a son, her parents, and an aunt. Rosary set for Sunday evening, funeral Monday at Blessed Sacrament Church.
A 24 hour blaze at Michigan's State office building caused about 4 million dollars in damage and halted much of state government. Firefighters from five cities fought sub zero conditions, injuring 12 firefighters and one officer as water and ice shaped the scene. Governor Williams convened chiefs to restore operations while 1300 employees were told to stay home.
Sudbury Ontario reports a Canadian Pacific passenger train hit the rear of a loaded bus seven miles east of the city. Eight men were killed and 22 injured in subzero weather with dense fog reducing visibility. The bus carried workers home from the International Nickel plant at Consiton, after a graveyard shift.
In downtown St Louis, a gun battle with two gunmen left one dead and three wounded. Detectives John Mahfood and Edward Moran were hurt, Moran listed in serious condition. Gunmen Robert Peters and Leonard Vierling were wounded. Peters died.
In Lucille Hunter school a nine year old girl died from a .22 caliber bullet wound to the head during music class. Half a mile away a gun battle involved Norman Giles 22 and his 37 year old brother Joe. Both are held on an open charge as police investigate.

He also savages rail union leaders for their handling of the rail strike, drawing swift defenses from the union chiefs and prompting a White House clarification.
Madison Wis a three member Republican group proposed a new reapportionment plan a move Assemblyman Schmidt charged aims to stall the redistricting process. The plan would form a joint four senate six assembly committee to study reapportionment measures in the 1951 session. Governance officials claim the measure would speed work while critics warn it blocks action and keep current schemes alive.
American forces reached the Han river south of Seoul as task forces including Myers pressed toward the capital. The offensive began January 25 and aims to pressure Chinese Reds and Korean militias, with heavy Allied casualties and prisoners reported. General Ridgway commended the multinational troops amid rapid advances near Inchon and Yongdongpo.
