A Santa Fe freight train traveling 58 mph struck a Littlefield Texas school bus carrying 29 people near U S 385. Seven died and 17 were injured, many from Fieldton. The bus driver Artiss Johnson, 68, survived in stable condition.
Senate Republicans accuse Democrats of past political espionage and seek to widen the Watergate probe to cover 1960 and 1964 campaigns. Hugh Scott says evidence of 1968 wiretapping exists and insists the inquiry include both parties. Nixon aides and deposition details surface as the investigation expands.
Firefighters probed the ruins of a two year old Paris school after a flash fire killed at least 18 people, 15 children, with five missing. A music teacher described blocked stairs and rapid smoke as he guided 13 pupils to safety and windows. A nearby resident recalled seeing a small flame before flames engulfed the building.

La Crosse Festivals officials win 5-0 approval from the Judiciary Committee for a one year trial of a weekday format from Oct 7 to Oct 11 1973 moving events to Sunday through Thursday and expanding police enforcement to reduce outside attendance and alcohol on streets. The plan shifts Maple Leaf Parade to Sunday and adds new activities across the city while keeping Torchlight Parade possible.
