Murder charge brought against Viroqua man
Lyle Gordon of Viroqua, about 40, was charged with first degree murder in the shooting of Martin Everson, 42, at Gordon’s Sunset Bowl bar. Bond set at 50,000. preliminary hearing scheduled for February 12. Everson was shot six times in the bowling alley bar witnessed by two police officers. Everson’s services set for Monday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. burial in Viroqua Cemetery. He was born October 22, 1930, and survived by his widow Betty Larson Gordon and two sons, among others.

Ex-Sen Brewster Sentenced for Accepting Bribe
Former Maryland Senator Daniel B. Brewster was sentenced to two to six years in prison and fined 30,000 dollars for illegal gratuity charges. Co-defendant Cyrus T. Anderson received 12 to 42 years and a 30,000 dollar fine. Judge Hart ordered consecutive terms and warned Brewster of breaching public trust. Both men plan appeals.

Jobless Rate Falls to 5 Percent in January
Washington AP The Labor Department reports the January unemployment rate at 5 percent, the lowest in 2% years. The number of jobless rose 560,000 but seasonally adjusted to a decline, with employment down 1.8 million to 81 million and average hourly earnings up 4 cents to 3.78 while weekly pay fell 1.15 to 138.35 due to a shorter work week.

Nurse’s quick action saves man aboard airliner
Mrs. June Dreier, 49, an LPN from La Crosse, revived John Lewis after a heart seizure on a North Central jet en route from Las Vegas to La Crosse. She performed mouth to mouth resuscitation and chest thrusts until an emergency landing at Denver where Lewis was taken to a hospital in satisfactory condition.
