Car plunges 80 feet into Black River gorge injuring driver
Phillip Fieber 31 of Hatfield Wisconsin survived a 80 foot plunge into the Black River after missing a curve on County Trunk K. He suffered a bloody nose and exposure in 30 below temps but escaped with minor injuries. Rescuers climbed down to him using tree branches for support and he was released from Black River Falls hospital in time for church.

Faint radio signals spurred a search for the Danish 2785 ton Hans Hedtoft missing with 95 aboard after hitting an iceberg off Greenland. Lifeboats with beacons possibly drifted west as weather hampered air and sea search efforts. A Canadian air force plane, the U S Coast Guard cutter Campbell and multiple ships continued the hunt with more planes expected at dawn.

About 700 workers at Allis-Chalmers La Crosse plant joined a nationwide strike of some 13 000 workers at eight AC plants. UAW Local 401 officials said peaceful picketing and soup kitchen support are in place while a Milwaukee meeting yielded deadlock.
