Supreme Court Ends Road Law Power in Wisconsin
The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled the 1947 County Road Act unconstitutional for directing public funds toward private road work. The decision, in a four to three vote, rejected government contracts enabling towns to build maintain or grade private roads, a ruling joined by Justices Broadfoot Hughes and Martin in dissent. Other cases reversed or affirmed involved gas pipe failure at Fond du Lac and Appleton sidewalk liability, property taxes on a church orphanage in Shawano county, and a Mendota cottage owner’s sewer connection rights.
