Navy SEALS arrive in Vietnam to counter Viet Cong tactics
Navy amphibious commandos known as SEALS train at Coronado to conduct unconventional warfare against Viet Cong forces. Capt Bucklew says the 200 veterans deploy by sea air or land, using hit and run tactics to harass the enemy, with missions on rivers by rubber raft or sampan and elaborate survival and language training. Bucklew notes SEALS grew from a Kennedy era push for counterinsurgency forces and that many have 36 months in Vietnam. Bucklew holds the Navy Cross with Gold Star for World War II espionage.
