La Crosse lawyer Edmund A Nix 2525 Main St announces his candidacy for judge of the new Fourth District Court of Appeals. Several other contenders for varying six year and four year terms include Robert De Chambeau Ed Nager Martha Bablitch Howard Boyle Svarre Tinglum and William Giese. Nix expects to decide on a term later and favors geographic balance in the field.
Gov. Martin Schreiber used state telephones to contact local Democratic Party leaders after succeeding Gov. Lucey. Records show 41 of 91 calls to Dem officials between Sept 23 and Oct 13 on one line and 88 of 181 calls to party leaders on another. Ehrenfeldt says calls were to prep for statewide open office hours. State law bans political use of state phones.
Wisconsin endures extreme cold with subzero readings across many cities. Highs reach single digits to the 10s, while overnight lows dip to the single digits below zero. A warming trend is forecast from tonight into Saturday, bringing lower 30s to low 40s and possible snow or rain.
Sheriff departments report a quiet holiday weekend with unusually cold readings. Temperatures ranged from 5 below in Crawford County to 34 below in Jackson County, with other readings including 22 below at Black River Falls and 11 below in Allamakee Iowa. The cold briefly froze water pipes at a Prairie du Chien construction site.
Egyptian President Anwar Sadat criticized Israel under Prime Minister Menachem Begin for not making tough concessions as the Ismailia summit yielded no final settlement. Begin offered limited self rule for Palestinians while Sadat pressed for an independent state and full Israeli withdrawal.
