U S troops engaged as many as 200 North Vietnamese troops within two miles of the Cambodian border. Jet bombers armed helicopters tanks and APCs supported. At least 72 NVA dead and 40 bunkers destroyed per aerial observers. Light American casualties reported.
A Viet Nam bound cargo ship loaded with rockets and bombs totaling 2000 tons of TNT burned in the mid Pacific as 39 crewmen abandoned the Badger State. Fourteen survivors were picked up by the Greek freighter Khian Star, while Navy planes and rescue teams monitored exploding hulls and giant swells. The ship, bound for Da Nang, carried 8900 rockets and large bombs. authorities weighed whether any munitions exploded as the vessel broke up. Concurrently, B52s pressed raids around North Vietnamese camps near Laos and Cambodia amid a Christmas cease fire.
A Friday night fire gutted the kitchen and bathroom of a two story Houston residence on Grant Street. Occupants David Lilly and Mr and Mrs Sundred were away. Lilly downtown and the Sundreds in Seattle. Fire confined to two rooms with smoke and water damage throughout. House insured.
Minneapolis hosts the Young Socialist Alliance four day convention with over 1,000 members from the US and abroad. Larry Seigle leads the group promising radicalization and a shift to socialism while planning protests against the war, draft, and oppression. A rally is slated in Minneapolis Old Market district. police limit march routes to the Old Federal Building area.
Madison researchers project the new general sales tax will yield about 263.5 million dollars more than the former selective tax over two years ending June 30, 1971. The increase comes from a four percent rate rise and broader taxed items, with major exemptions and added services such as printing and private parking. The alliance notes most consumable utilities stay taxable and tax applies to related repairs. See TAX, Page 2.

Forecast shows continued cloudiness Saturday night and Sunday with light snow possible. Lows around 15 and highs near 20 with a 40 percent precipitation chance Saturday night and 60 percent Sunday. Monday remains cloudy with a chance of more snow and a low near 10.

Captor offered brief remarks and a final apology while Cuban hosts treated the group kindly with cigars fruit juice and gifts.
Staff Sgt. David Mitchell, charged with 30 counts of assault with intent to murder in the My Lai case, testified at the Pentagon that he is not guilty. Lt. William L. Calley Jr. faces 109 murders. The Army board investigation continues with Gen. Peers and lawyer MacCrate to Vietnam to gather testimony and assess potential cover up.
Heavy snows and strong winds scour the eastern United States from the Atlantic coast to the Great Lakes and the central Appalachians. Up to two feet blanketed areas from New York to northern New England, with Maine and Virginia Beach issuing warnings. City outages persist in North Carolina as crews work. New York City faced six inches of snow causing transit delays while Mayor Lindsay directed operations. A separate storm threatened the Southwest and Rockies as more precipitation moved into the north Pacific and interior mountain regions.
