A six month old infant was found on the doorstep of Mr and Mrs Evan Evans at 610 Mississippi Street after a Christmas party. Wrapped in baby clothes with a card reading Take me in I'm an orphan the child remained unidentified. Owners consider adoption if unclaimed.
Ice froze solid across the river overnight and daylight revealed a continuous sheet from bank to bank. Only twice before in city weather history has the river iced in so late, with a large honeycombed cake fronting the city and linked to a downriver gorge. Teams wait for stiff cold to pass.
Freehold New Jersey December 26 John Brennan is dead and Howard Sheffield and Samuel Hampton fatally injured with four others seriously wounded when a railroad train collides with a coaching party returning from a game. The injured were taken to hospital in the caboose as debris scattered.
An unknown man tried to leap into the river but was stopped by Sylvester Mentour as he fought the distressed man while others intervened. The would be suicide was rushed to a hospital where doctors found he had already ingested strychnine and morphine.
La Crosse resident E. A. Lambert is named band leader for Lanesboro with B. E. Olson as president FE. A. Higham as secretary and Geo. Julsrud as treasurer. About thirty businessmen back the effort and the band plans about twenty five players to start in Rushford.
The forecast calls for generally fair conditions tonight and Wednesday with a rise in temperature. A mild spell continues with a high near 28 and a low around 26.
Speculation in copper resumed in New York on December 26 with reports and rumors. Anaconda rose sharply by about 24 or 31 points from Saturday's close while Amalgamated gained three points to 103 1/4. Lawson's market stance remained uncertain.
Tipton Oregon was nearly wiped out by a major blaze last night with minimal water supply no local fire department and no insurance. Most residents left homeless as flames consumed buildings in the town.
Paris December 26 Count Jules Bonvou Lier and Princess Bianca Stiglano Colonna wed civilly at Passy mayor's office. The couple is to have a church ceremony tomorrow. Princess Colonna is granddaughter of Mrs. John Waikay.

In St. Petersburg on December 26 the strike largely ends with thousands returning to work and nearly a thousand leaders jailed. Socialists say the setback is temporary. Witte’s strength grows as ministers plan to send Orloff’s brigade into Baltic provinces. Moscow sees continued fighting and thousands slain across cities.
Louis Megargle publisher of Seen and Heard, a prominent newspaper man, died at 8 o'clock this morning in Philadelphia. He was noted for his long career and influence in journalism.
A Salem dispatch reports new phase in land frauds involving Horace McKinley and S A D Puter as Fenwood Lumber of Wausau Wisconsin seeks refund of partial payments on counterfeit school land certificates. The firm loaned money on the bogus certificates to D R Murphy alias a federal defrauder and the state land board awaits legal authority to refund.
Walter Heiberg, a midshipman at the Annapolis Naval Academy and son of J. P. Heiberg of this city, tops the team of eight sharpshooters at the academy. A large photograph of the team was sent home as a Christmas gift. Heiberg is in his second year. he is brother of Captain Heiberg U S A who graduated West Point in 1895 and is stationed at Ford Mead.
Circuit court opened at 9 30 this morning to hear the state case against Clara Miles charged with larceny from the person of M Ellingson a Houston county farmer. Ellingson testified Miles slipped her hand into his pocket and took 35 dollars in May after a brief acquaintance. He pursued but could not catch her. Defense may seek alibi with several Dark town residents subpoenaed.
The Navy reports gunboat Dubuque has reached Puerto Plata to protect interests while President Morales leaves the capital with followers to join Jiminez in opposition to Horace. A clash with factions is expected near San Juan or Puerto Plata as troops pursue officials. The port captain is killed and Puerto Plata’s governor resists central authority.
At the White House on December 26 the president appeared in riding costume while Loeb stayed home. The president, his son Theodore, and a friend rode horses. They plan a country trip tomorrow and expect to hunt game with rifles. Several callers were disappointed by the president’s absence.
Sweet charity filled La Crosse homes yesterday as numerous societies provided dinners and gifts for the poor. Wealthier residents aided individual cases while children at the home for the friendless and two Catholic orphan asylums enjoyed traditional home Christmas celebrations, the volunteers rewarded by the waifs’ happiness.
The McIntosh Brothers, already holding the second track contract for the Milwaukee road from Brookfield Junction to La Crosse, secure a new 1,500 mile line from Evarts to Settle and Tacoma. The project is valued at fifty million dollars, the largest ever let to a single party, to be completed within three years.
J. J. Hill's private secretary denied reports that Hill would resign or cut back his railroad and financial activities in St. Paul.
Labor department figures show 376 towns with no saloon demand and 113 cities plus 183 villages issuing licenses. Five villages and sixteen no license villages exist, while five cities ban saloons by vote. In total 500 towns permit licenses and 223 oppose.
Des Moines dispatch reports W. C. Bryan president of the New Sharon Light company was arrested for allegedly trading worthless land to obtain a twelve hundred dollar automobile. The case centers on a bigamist allegation and a dispute over the vehicle.
The death of Jefferson M. Gove, a traveling representative, uncovers a bigamous life. Miss Anna Parker of Fountain, Minn., was his first wife here. a second wife, Mrs. Gove No. 2, lives in St. Cloud, Minnesota. The case shows Gove married in La Crosse three years ago and maintained two households with both wives informed after his death. The Masons handled arrangements and notified the families.
The governor ordered the return of Homer Whitefall H. Johnson and W. Stanton to Chillicothe Missouri for dynamiting the Udell bank.
Three packed houses greet the new holiday-week program at the Bijou theatre. Wells brothers open with a novelty musical act. William Armond sings Baby Clue. The Juggling Parrotts stage top comedy, Dollie Wells debuts as a cartoonist, and Buckeye Trio delivers acrobatic contortions in the Tramp's Dream. A pair of short films follow with comic chases and a dream sequence ending in a bath scene.
Borge Borreson, currently engaged in civil engineering work in the Black Hills, is spending the holiday season at his home in Chamberlain, South Dakota.
The Milwaukee road pontoon bridge at Prairie du Chien is closed and traffic from east and west is diverted to the proper route. When open, no trains could cross the Mississippi River due to floating ice, so all freight bound east and west was sent around via La Crosse or Dubuque. The company prefers to keep the bridge open to protect the hulls on which it rests during full ice.
Meridan reports two men killed in a collision on the Alabama and Vicksburg road last night. One victim was a trainman. the other a tramp named Thomas Devine who had been home from New Lisbon and returned to resume duties today.
