The Maine and North Carolina plus other U S warships are en route to Venezuelan waters. Delegated by the State Department they sail to press for peaceful settlement of claims and to back Acting President Gomez. Dutch patrols halt operations to allow Gomez a chance for peaceful action.

Chicago December report states Samuel Gompers will serve the jail term today rather than attend the Denver Labor convention. He declared at the Bucks case trial that he would go to jail if needed, showing resolve during the convention period.
In a court session lasting over two hours labor leaders listen as Justice Wright reads the opinion. Samuel Gompers and the AFL figures face sentencing with Mrs Gompers attending. Gompers declares he has not violated law, insisting he would not knowingly do so.
Springfield I I Dec 23 As soon as he learned of the Supreme Court order sentencing Gompers Mitchell and Morrison for contempt of court President J H Walker of the Illinois United Mine Workers called a conference of officers and board members. A telegram to Theodore Roosevelt requests influence to prevent incarceration of these men and defends free press and free speech as fundamental to the nation. Indianapolis dispatch reports the United Mine Workers plan swift radical action over the Washington judge's jail sentence for John Mitchell. National Secretary-Treasurer Ryan said action would come before nightfall but declined to specify. The miners headquarters circulated the news to district officers in President Lewis’s absence.
